The financial divergence largely stems from Rodri’s contractual timeline. With his current deal at the Etihad Stadium set to expire in June 2027, the midfielder will enter his final contracted year during the 2026–27 season. In contemporary transfer strategy, entering the penultimate twelve months of an agreement usually reduces transfer fees, as the risk of losing an elite player for free looms larger for the selling club.

Under regulations overseen by UEFA and FIFA, players entering the final six months of a contract can formalize pre-contract agreements with foreign teams. Real Madrid’s internal management is using this temporal leverage to justify their €60 million limit, arguing that paying full market value for a player nearing free agency contradicts prudent financial planning.

Conversely, Manchester City view the €80 million floor as a reflection of Rodri’s status as a World Cup winner and premier defensive midfielder. For the Premier League side, replacing a player who dictates tempo at the highest level requires reinvestment that far exceeds standard valuations, regardless of remaining deal duration.

Although Real Madrid previously issued statements denying formal contacts with the English club, initial denials of this nature are standard operational posture during exploratory transfer windows. The emergence of precise figures from both camps indicates that dialogue between key representatives has progressed beyond preliminary inquiries.

Manchester City still retain the structural option to offer extension terms, which would re-establish their market leverage if accepted.
