Anthropic Pursues Custom AI Silicon with SK Hynix Memory Request

Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic PBC is taking steps to design its own proprietary semiconductors, requesting memory chip supplies from South Korean hardware leader SK Hynix Inc. to build out its in-house silicon ambitions.
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae Won revealed the request during an AI conference in San Francisco, where he shared the stage with Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei and other tech industry leaders. Chey, whose conglomerate holds a controlling stake in SK Hynix, described the software developer’s venture into custom hardware production as a remarkable shift in strategy.
Anthropic’s move reflects a widening trend among premier artificial intelligence research firms aiming to establish direct control over their hardware supply chains. Designing bespoke accelerators allows AI companies to tailor compute capacity specifically for complex large language models while mitigating long-term operational costs and supply constraints. High-performance memory modules—particularly High Bandwidth Memory, in which SK Hynix holds a market-leading position—are fundamental components required to support the massive data transfer rates of modern AI processors.
The announcement coincided with a high-profile Silicon Valley visit by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who convened an AI summit to strengthen commercial and technological ties between South Korea and global technology firms. The gathering provided the backdrop for several key international agreements, including new business partnerships involving Nvidia Corp., South Korean internet giant Naver Corp., and SK Group.
