Meta Unveils Standalone Seller App and Free Identity Verification System for Facebook

Meta is introducing a series of major functional updates to Facebook, headlined by a dedicated management application for online merchants, a free user verification protocol, and an opt-in full-screen video interface on launch.

The centerpiece of the overhaul is “Seller,” a standalone companion app tailored specifically for high-volume vendors on Facebook Marketplace. The platform currently hosts more than 430 million monthly listings and serves over 1.1 billion active users, making peer-to-peer commerce one of Facebook’s main drivers for retaining younger demographics. The new utility allows merchants to handle inventory listings, communicate directly with customers, and monitor listing performance metrics. Meta also plans to embed artificial intelligence tools into the application, enabling automated item descriptions and automated search functionality across groups to help answer customer inquiries.

The release reflects a broader operational shift at Meta toward launching focused, modular applications to drive specific user behaviors. The company recently released Forum, a Reddit-style standalone service built around Facebook Groups, as well as Pocket, an app designed for software development and “vibe coding.” By unbundling heavy features into dedicated software, tech platforms often aim to streamline complex user workflows without cluttering the primary newsfeed experience.

Alongside the merchant features, Facebook is launching “Facebook Verified,” a free authentication system intended to confirm human identity and curb automated bots across sensitive community areas. Unlike the subscription-based Meta Verified offering—which grants a blue badge alongside administrative perks—the new system requires users to complete a video selfie verification process. Verified accounts will display a distinctive white checkmark inside a circular badge across Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Dating, and Facebook Groups.

Additionally, the social network is testing a full-screen, video-first interface that opens automatically upon launching the main application. Designed to capitalize on short-form media consumption trends, the feature is initially rolling out in select international markets with high video consumption habits before expanding to the United States next year. Users who prefer the traditional layout retain the option to disable the full-screen video view and return to the classic feed-based interface, mirroring previous UI experiments conducted on Instagram.
