Diomande Starts as Real Madrid Face Rayo in Bernabéu Clash

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the leading scorer in the history of the Real Madrid-Rayo Vallecano fixture with 12 goals, followed by Karim Benzema with 11. The latest meeting at the Santiago Bernabéu will feature Yan Diomande, as José Mourinho gives the £120 million winger his full debut on Saturday.

Diomande is part of an attacking group that includes Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham. Real Madrid are seeking to preserve a perfect home record in the 2026/27 campaign while extending a 28-year home unbeaten run against their city neighbors.

Rayo Vallecano arrive with four points after their first league victory of the season, a 3-2 home win over Racing Santander last Saturday. The fixture is Madrid’s first domestic outing since a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis on Sept. 4. That result was the first setback of Mourinho’s second managerial stint at the club, although Real Madrid have won all three of their home matches across all competitions this season.

Rayo’s attacking form has come alongside defensive problems. The club have conceded 10 goals in their first four matches, the second-highest total in the league behind Elche’s 12, and have not kept a clean sheet this term. Their last eight La Liga fixtures have produced only one shutout.

Mourinho made four changes after Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League group-stage victory over Inter Milan. Alongside Diomande, Antonio Rüdiger, Bernardo Silva, and Álvaro Carreras return to the starting eleven.

Thibaut Courtois starts behind Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konaté, Rüdiger, and Carreras. Silva joins Federico Valverde in midfield, with Bellingham, Diomande, Vinícius, and Mbappé forming the advanced group.

Rayo are also tied with Getafe and Sevilla for the league lead in dismissals, with two red cards. Their 58 fouls are the fifth-highest total, behind Espanyol and Sevilla on 67, Real Sociedad on 62, and Racing Club on 60.

Recent meetings have been close: four of the last six league encounters ended in draws, including a 0-0 stalemate in Madrid in November 2023. Rayo have scored in six of their last eight matches against Real Madrid, producing six goals across the last five meetings.

Real Madrid are unbeaten in the last seven meetings overall, with three wins and four draws. Each of the previous two encounters at the Bernabéu ended in a 2-1 Madrid victory, while Rayo’s only win in the last 10 editions of the fixture since April 2019 came in November 2022, when they prevailed 3-2 at home in Vallecas.

At the Bernabéu, Madrid have gone 18 consecutive home matches unbeaten against Rayo in all competitions, recording 13 wins and five draws since January 1996. Guilherme Alves scored twice in Rayo’s 2-1 victory for the visitors at that time.
