Apple’s $2,000 iPhone Duo Brings the Pencil to a Foldable Phone

Apple’s first foldable iPhone targets enterprise users and creative professionals

Apple is preparing to enter the flexible display market with a high-end foldable device priced from $2,000. The company has selected the name “iPhone Duo” for the flagship handset, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who reported the details ahead of Apple’s scheduled “Surprise and Shine” product launch event. The branding differs from the widely speculated “iPhone Ultra” name.

The base model will include 256 gigabytes of internal storage, while higher-tier configurations will rise incrementally to nearly $3,000 for a 2-terabyte model. Sharp price increases and global supply constraints affecting mobile RAM have put pressure on Apple’s pricing plans.

Apple hardware engineering executives, led by Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus, have adjusted retail pricing margins in response. The company plans to absorb part of the manufacturing cost increases on the 256GB entry model rather than pass the full component price spikes on to entry-level buyers, offsetting those costs through higher profit margins on top-tier storage variants.

The “iPhone Duo” name also draws historical parallels to Microsoft’s Surface Duo, an Android-based dual-screen device launched in 2020. Microsoft’s product used two distinct hinged panels instead of a single continuous flexible display.

Apple’s device will bring active stylus support via the Apple Pencil to an iPhone for the first time. Since introducing the Apple Pencil alongside the original iPad Pro in November 2015, Apple has limited the digital stylus to its tablet lineup. On the iPhone Duo, pencil compatibility is intended to give the expanded inner screen functionality similar to a compact iPad, targeting enterprise users and creative professionals.

The foldable flagship is expected to run on Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro system-on-chip, the same processor architecture slated for the premium iPhone 18 Pro series. Connectivity will use Apple’s proprietary C2 cellular modem.

The C2 modem marks another stage in Apple’s multi-year effort to replace third-party baseband chips with custom silicon. Apple accelerated its in-house modem development after acquiring Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion in 2019.

The hardware will feature a dual rear camera system with two 48-megapixel sensors. A 12-megapixel front-facing sensor will handle video conferencing and facial recognition, while the outer chassis will be available in white and dark blue.

Commercial rollout is scheduled for October, although initial regional availability remains unconfirmed. Apple’s entry arrives several years after Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019 and Google entered the sector with the Pixel Fold in 2023.

The launch event is also expected to include the next-generation iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, along with updated wearable audio and fitness hardware: the fifth-generation AirPods, the Apple Watch Series 12, and the high-durability Apple Watch Ultra 14.
