Wegmans Ultimate Chocolate Cake Drops to $20 for October
The 48-ounce bakery favorite normally retails for $34, but the grocery chain dropped the price to mark its 20th anniversary.

Wegmans is selling its best-selling bakery cake at a steep discount through the end of October, marking two decades since an employee-developed recipe became one of the most recognizable items in the supermarket chain’s prepared foods lineup.
The 48-ounce round Ultimate Chocolate Cake is priced at $20 across all Wegmans locations this month. The standard retail price for the same size is approximately $34. Shoppers can also purchase a 15-ounce version for $15 or individual 5-ounce slices for $7.
The promotion coincides with the 20th anniversary of the dessert, which originated as an internal recipe created by a Wegmans staff member rather than a corporate product development team. Employee-driven recipes have historically been a cornerstone of the Rochester, New York-based grocer’s strategy to differentiate itself from competitors like Publix and H-E-B, both of which maintain fiercely loyal regional followings built partly on signature bakery items. Publix, for example, built a similar cult following around its Chantilly cake, while Wegmans leaned into dense, intensely flavored layer cakes that bridge the gap between mass-market grocery baking and specialty patisserie standards.
Unlike the brightly colored sheet cakes common in most American supermarket bakeries, the Ultimate Chocolate Cake features a dark chocolate base paired with a thick chocolate frosting. Wegmans advises customers to let the cake reach room temperature before serving. This step softens the icing and alters the crumb structure, preventing the dense texture typical of refrigerated grocery store baked goods. The flavor profile relies on a pronounced cocoa intensity in the frosting balanced by a slightly milder sponge, keeping the overall sweetness from becoming overwhelming.
Media personality Kylie Kelce, a former collegiate field hockey player married to retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, recently highlighted the cake’s cultural footprint during a podcast appearance. She described buying entire cakes for personal consumption during her college years, a period that aligns with the brand’s aggressive expansion into Mid-Atlantic college towns.
That expansion explains why the cake has achieved national recognition despite Wegmans operating only about 110 stores. The company entered the North Carolina market with its Chapel Hill location in 2021, pushing further south after establishing dominance in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts. A Manhattan location near the Brooklyn Navy Yard has also cemented the brand’s presence in New York City, where premium grocery competition is intense.
Because Wegmans controls its own bakery production rather than relying entirely on third-party commercial suppliers, the chain maintains tight quality control over ingredients and preparation methods. This vertical integration allows for promotional pricing events like the current anniversary sale without sacrificing the structural integrity of the product.
The $20 pricing remains active at every Wegmans bakery counter until Oct. 31, 2026.
