Barcelona Raises Hamza Abdelkarim’s Release Clause to €150 Million

BARCELONA, Spain — Hamza Abdelkarim will remain integrated into FC Barcelona’s first-team training group on a daily basis, although Hansi Flick said the club does not plan to immediately place the 18-year-old Egyptian forward in the starting XI. He will be available for selection in official matches when tactical matchups warrant his inclusion.

Barcelona has extended Abdelkarim’s contract through June 2030, adding one year to the previous agreement that ran through June 2029. The revised deal also includes improved financial terms aligned with his elevated status inside the club.

The club confirmed the adjustment this week as sporting director Deco and head coach Flick work to secure key developmental assets amid ongoing wage cap constraints in Spain’s top division. Abdelkarim’s release clause is now €150 million ($162 million), substantially higher than the undisclosed lower figure attached to his previous contract.

His new valuation followed a breakthrough summer campaign. The Egyptian teenager unexpectedly finished as Barcelona’s top scorer during preseason exhibition matches, registering four goals. That goalscoring form altered internal projections and prompted the coaching staff and sporting department to fast-track the contract adjustment.

Speaking about the extension at a Saturday press conference ahead of competitive action, Flick praised both the player and the club’s work on the agreement. “The club has done a great job,” Flick said. “He’s a player who performed well in preseason and is competing with other players. He’s a different type of player and a great prospect for the future of the club. We had to keep him.”

Spanish labor law requires every professional athlete in the country to have a designated buyout clause, known as a cláusula de rescisión. The requirement is established under Royal Decree 1006/1985.

Barcelona has systematically used elevated buyout thresholds since Paris Saint-Germain paid Neymar’s €222 million clause in 2017. The club’s clauses range from €150 million for emerging prospects to €1 billion for established starters such as Lamine Yamal and Pedri, with the aim of deterring rival European and Middle Eastern clubs from signing players without prior negotiation.

Abdelkarim’s extension follows Barcelona’s recent efforts to retain other teenage talents from its system. The club recently agreed to upgraded terms for 17-year-old midfielder Marc Bernal, continuing a framework established during Xavi Hernández’s managerial tenure and maintained under Flick.

With La Liga’s Squad Cost Limit restricting major foreign acquisitions, Barcelona’s sporting direction relies heavily on securing young players who can provide low-cost, high-upside depth behind established starters such as Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
