Why Gavi’s Return Is Being Managed So Carefully at Barcelona
Flick balances Gavi’s ambition with Barcelona’s midfield depth

BARCELONA, Spain — Hansi Flick has made long-term squad rotation and careful physical load management central to Barcelona’s approach as the club navigates a highly competitive midfield and a multi-front campaign. The German manager addressed the midfield dynamic at a press conference on Tuesday, saying playing time would be carefully managed and distributed across a grueling season.
Gavi, 20, started Barcelona’s La Liga opener away against Elche before a minor knee injury ruled him out of the next two matches. After returning to full training and the matchday squad, the combative midfielder has played seven minutes. His limited involvement has come while Barcelona has remained in strong form during his absence, alongside the coaching staff’s cautious approach to his physical workload.
“Every player in the squad is important,” Flick told reporters, according to a report by Barça Blaugranes. Barcelona will need its entire roster to compete in domestic and European tournaments, and Flick has praised Gavi’s work ethic and performances in training. Gavi has immense ambition to play immediately, but the coaching staff must make calculated decisions about player minutes to prevent fatigue and re-injury.
The midfield competition has intensified during the first month and a half of the campaign, with Flick rotating his lineup extensively. Pedri, the 21-year-old creative cornerstone and 2021 Golden Boy winner, remains central to Barcelona’s possession play. Dani Olmo, signed from RB Leipzig in August 2024 for a reported initial fee of €55 million ($59.7 million), brings versatile attacking options.
Marc Bernal, the 17-year-old defensive midfielder, rose through the La Masia academy ranks to earn early-season starts under Flick. Fermín López enjoyed a breakout 2023–24 campaign and won a gold medal with Spain at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Rodri has also quickly secured a starting role in the midfield setup, adding further defensive stability to the central unit.
Flick took over as Barcelona head coach in May 2024 on a contract running through June 2026, succeeding Xavi Hernández. The former Bayern Munich and German national team coach brought his high-pressing, vertical 4-2-3-1 tactical system to Catalonia. Its double-pivot midfield structure demands exceptional physical conditioning, mobility, and defensive discipline from its central players.
Barcelona’s rotation policy is intended to manage player fitness. In recent seasons, the club has struggled with key players completing consecutive 90-minute matches, at times resulting in late-season physical drop-offs or long-term injuries. Flick characterized Gavi’s situation as a positive problem of squad depth rather than an exclusion of the young midfielder.
Barcelona is competing in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and an expanded UEFA Champions League format that guarantees at least eight league-phase matches before the knockout rounds. Flick’s comments on Tuesday indicate that Gavi’s gradual integration is designed to ensure he reaches peak fitness for the decisive stages of the season.
