Barcelona’s Perfect Start Faces Levante’s Six-Game Home Fortress

Levante’s home fortress puts Barcelona’s perfect league start under pressure

VALENCIA, Spain — Barcelona’s perfect domestic record will be tested at the Estadio Ciutat de València on Sunday, where La Liga’s leaders face a Levante side that has won six consecutive home games stretching back to the end of last season.

The fixture is scheduled for a 15:15 BST kickoff on Sunday (10:15 a.m. ET / 7:15 a.m. PT). In the United Kingdom, Premier Sports 1 will provide live television coverage, with online streaming available through the Premier Sports app. Subscriptions cost £120 annually, £11.99 per month on a year-long contract, or £16.99 for a flexible monthly subscription requiring 30 days’ notice for cancellation.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has opened the Spanish league season with four consecutive victories. His squad also recorded a commanding 5-1 midweek victory over Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League, but Real Madrid drew level on points at the top of the table on Saturday after a decisive victory over Rayo Vallecano. Barcelona must win to reclaim sole possession of first place.

Levante’s home form is led by captain Roger Brugue, whose team has remained undefeated since an opening-day defeat to Espanyol. That run includes away draws at Osasuna and Malaga and a high-scoring 5-2 home victory against Real Betis. Brugue is also the only Levante player to have scored multiple times this season, finding the net twice.

“Barca is a great rival and they’re coming into this game in good form, but we also know we’re strong at home,” Brugue told Levante’s official media channels ahead of the match. “We’ve won six straight at home and we’re going there without fear, without any inferiority complex. We’re going to work, make a good game plan and why not?”

The sides have produced contrasting attacking numbers. Barcelona has registered a league-high 36 attempts on target, narrowly ahead of Real Madrid’s 35. Brazilian winger Raphinha leads the league’s individual scoring charts with six goals, one ahead of Rayo Vallecano’s Sergio Camello. Raphinha and Camello are the only players to have outscored Barcelona’s young Spanish talents Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal, who have four goals each.

Levante has managed only 14 shots on target, surpassing only Celta Vigo with 12, Valencia with 11, Malaga with seven, and Getafe with six. Its defensive efficiency will therefore face a major test against Flick’s attack, while veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will be responsible for protecting the goal line.

Ryan, the Australian international who previously played in England’s Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion and in La Liga with Real Sociedad, has made 17 saves this season. That total ties him with Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro and Athletic Club’s Unai Simon for the division’s highest figure.

Sunday’s match also brings together two of the cleanest teams in Spanish football. Barcelona and Levante have each received only four yellow cards, fewer than any other La Liga club. Barcelona players have committed 35 infractions and Levante has recorded 39; only Real Madrid with 36 and Real Betis with 38 separate them at the top of the league’s fair-play rankings.

Historical results favor Levante at the Estadio Ciutat de València. All six of the club’s victories against Barcelona have come at home, including a 3-1 triumph in November 2019. Jose Campana, Borja Mayoral, and Nemanja Radoja scored in the second half after Lionel Messi had opened the scoring with a first-half penalty. Messi remains the fixture’s most prolific goalscorer, with 24 career goals against Levante—18 more than any other player.

Barcelona has controlled the more recent meetings, remaining unbeaten in its last seven games against Levante and winning six. The Catalan club has taken victory in the last four consecutive encounters, scoring exactly three goals in each of the last five.

Games in Valencia have continued to produce high-scoring drama. The last four matches played at Levante have averaged five goals per game, including consecutive 3-2 Barcelona victories during the 2021/22 and 2025/26 campaigns. In the most recent league meeting last season, Barcelona escaped with another 3-2 win after a dramatic 91st-minute own goal decided the game in stoppage time.
