BMW iX3 Blows Past Porsche, Audi in U.S. After Late Q3 Launch

First U.S. sales data show iX3 beating established electric SUV rivals after a late third-quarter debut

BMW’s all-electric iX3 SUV arrived in the United States in September, missing most of the third quarter, yet it already posted stronger sales than every luxury-electric rival of comparable size and price. According to a new EV sales report from Cox Automotive, the iX3 moved 1,101 units in the three months ended Sept. 30.

That figure matters more than it looks on its face. With deliveries starting only in September, the iX3 competed for roughly the final six weeks of the quarter. It outsold the Porsche Macan EV (1,023), the Audi Q6 e-tron (810), the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric (341), the Genesis Electrified GV70 (163), and the Volvo EX60 (137), all nameplates with longer U.S. histories, the data show.

Within BMW’s own electric portfolio the iX3 was also the third-best seller. The i4 led with 2,539 units, followed by the i5 with 720 and the i7 with 464; the discontinued iX moved just 121 units.

The performance gap is especially striking against Porsche. The Macan EV has been a fixture in the luxury electric crossover market, and the iX3 — which was available in only a single trim, the 50 xDrive, throughout the quarter — still edged it. In Q3 the iX3 beat the Macan by 78 units.

The 50 xDrive carries 463 horsepower and is rated at up to 434 miles of range on a full charge, though some tests have pushed the figure past 600 miles. It uses the same 800-volt architecture that enables charging up to 400 kW, BMW has said.

A high-performance variant is arriving next year. The iX3 M60 will produce 603 hp from dual motors and accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, BMW says, at the cost of some range compared with the 50 xDrive.

The iX3 also carries weight beyond its own sales. It is the first production vehicle to introduce BMW’s Neue Klasse design language and platform, the framework the automaker will mirror across other models, including the i3 sedan. Its role as a proof point makes the early U.S. response a bellwether for the brand’s electric strategy.

The result came despite stiff competition from established rivals and new arrivals alike. The GLC Electric and Volvo EX60 are fresh to the U.S. market, while the Macan EV, Q6 e-tron, and Electrified GV70 have had more time to build momentum.

If the iX3 sustains this pace it could also edge cheaper electric SUVs. The Lexus RZ moved 2,400 units in the quarter, a figure the iX3 would still trail but on a trajectory that narrows the gap as deliveries continue.

The iX3 was awarded the World Car of the Year title in 2026, an early signal of how the industry is viewing the model as BMW pivots toward an all-electric lineup.
