Southwest Airlines Adds Platinum Tier and Unlimited Companion Passes

The 2027 restructuring ends open-era loyalty rules, linking unlimited companion travel to a new Platinum status and expanding global point partnerships.

Southwest Airlines is dismantling the loyalty structure it relied on for decades, replacing its two-tier A-List system with a three-level hierarchy designed to capture high-spending business travelers and credit card users. The overhaul, taking effect Jan. 1, 2027, introduces a Platinum tier that grants unlimited Companion Pass trips — a benefit previously restricted by strict annual earning thresholds.

The restructuring signals a definitive end to Southwest’s identity as a no-frills point-to-point carrier. Current A-List status converts to Silver, while A-List Preferred becomes Gold. The new Platinum level sits above both, fundamentally altering how the airline rewards its most frequent flyers.

For decades, the Companion Pass — allowing a designated traveler to fly free alongside the pass holder — required accumulating 135,000 qualifying points or completing 100 one-way flights in a single calendar year. Tying unlimited companion travel directly to a top-tier status rather than an annual sprint aligns Southwest with the elite qualification models used by Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines. Those legacy carriers have long leveraged multi-tiered loyalty programs to lock corporate travelers into their ecosystems.

Southwest is simultaneously accelerating the earning timeline for its co-branded Chase credit card holders. Beginning in January, Rapid Rewards credit card users will earn one Tier Qualifying Point per dollar spent on eligible purchases. This creates a direct spending pathway to elite status, reducing reliance on actual flight volume. Credit card spend has become the primary profit engine for U.S. airline loyalty programs; major carriers routinely generate more pre-tax income from selling miles to bank partners than from operating aircraft.

Southwest Airlines Temporarily Halts Flights In U.S.

Travelers who fall between tiers will not face a binary reward cliff. Members progressing toward Silver can select interim perks such as Rapid Rewards points or seat certificates. Those bridging the gap between Gold and Platinum receive three Companion Pass trips, maintaining engagement before reaching the highest status.

The program expansion extends well beyond domestic travel. Starting in spring 2027, members can earn and redeem points through new partnerships with Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad Airways. These agreements fill a critical geographic void. Because Southwest operates almost exclusively within North America, Central America and the Caribbean, its loyalty currency historically held less appeal for international travelers compared to alliance-backed competitors like Star Alliance or Oneworld.

Point redemption options broaden further later in 2027 when travelers can apply Rapid Rewards balances toward seat selections, including Extra Legroom and Preferred seats. Rental car redemptions launch earlier, beginning in November 2026. Southwest ended its open-seating policy in 2024 after more than 50 years, making assigned seat selection a monetizable product for the first time.

These changes arrive as broader industry pressures force carriers to recalibrate operations. Rising jet fuel costs have prompted several major airlines to trim capacity and cut underperforming routes throughout 2026, increasing the competitive urgency to maximize revenue per available seat mile through ancillary sales and premium products.

The loyalty overhaul anchors a wider premium push that includes physical infrastructure investments. Last month, the Dallas-based airline announced plans to open its first airport lounges, branded as Southwest Icon Lounges, scheduled to debut in late 2027 through a partnership with Chase. Access requires a new premium Southwest credit card launching the same year. This move targets younger demographics, particularly Gen Z and millennial travelers, who increasingly arrive at airports hours early to leverage credit card lounge access for complimentary meals, beverages and Wi-Fi rather than relying solely on traditional elite status.

Fleet-wide connectivity upgrades accompany the ground-level enhancements. Southwest plans to equip its entire fleet with Starlink Wi-Fi by fall 2027, offering free access to Rapid Rewards members where the service is active.

Shares of Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) rose $1.49, or 3.79%, trading at $40.83 following the announcements.
