How to Disable Apple Intelligence Features in iOS 27

iOS 27 removed the universal AI toggle, requiring users to manage Siri, summaries, and generative tools across individual app and Screen Time settings.

Apple eliminated the single system-wide toggle for Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, forcing iPhone users who want to restrict artificial intelligence features to navigate multiple settings menus. The change affects anyone running an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or any iPhone 16 model and later.

Users still running iOS 26 retain access to the universal shut-off switch under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. But the latest operating system release distributes AI controls across individual apps, notification preferences, and Screen Time restrictions, reflecting a broader industry shift where device makers embed generative AI so deeply into core functions that opting out requires deliberate manual configuration rather than a simple preference flip.

The most prominent change involves Siri itself. iOS 27 overhauled the voice assistant with large language model capabilities, making it conversational and context-aware. Users who prefer the legacy behavior can open Settings > Siri, scroll to the bottom, tap Turn Off Siri, and confirm. From that same screen, selecting Turn On Siri followed by Use Siri Classic restores the pre-AI version capable of basic tasks like setting timers and launching music playback without processing requests through generative models.

Apple first introduced Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 during late 2024, initially limiting features to U.S. English before expanding language support. Early iterations drew scrutiny after AI-generated notification summaries occasionally produced inaccurate headlines, prompting Apple to add disclaimers and refine the models. Those reliability concerns remain a primary reason some users seek granular control over what the software can summarize or rewrite.

Disabling those summarization tools now requires visiting each affected application individually. To stop AI-generated recaps from replacing message previews, navigate to Settings > Apps > Messages and turn off Summarize Messages. Email users follow a parallel path: Settings > Apps > Mail, then disable Summarize Message Previews to force the inbox to display the opening lines of recent messages instead of algorithmic digests.

System-level notification management lives under Settings > Notifications. The Summarize Notifications toggle can be killed entirely or configured on a per-app basis from the same screen. A separate feature called Prioritize Notifications, which uses AI to push what it determines are the most urgent alerts to the top of the stack, is disabled via Settings > Notifications > Prioritize Notifications.

Generative writing and image creation tools require a detour through parental control infrastructure because Apple placed no direct toggles inside standard Siri or app settings. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, enable the restrictions, and tap Siri. Changing Writing Assistance to Don’t Allow blocks the system-wide rewriting, proofreading, and tone-adjustment tools accessible from any text field. Setting Image Creation to Don’t Allow disables Image Playground, Genmoji custom emoji generation, and Image Wand sketch-to-image conversion.

That same Screen Time menu houses controls for Math Assistance, which powers complex problem-solving in Calculator and Notes, and Extensions, which governs whether Siri can hand off queries to third-party services such as ChatGPT. Blocking extensions keeps all processed data within Apple’s Private Cloud Compute architecture or on-device silicon, preventing external API calls.

Several other integrated AI behaviors operate quietly in default configurations. Smart Reply, which drafts email responses mimicking the user’s historical writing style, is deactivated under Settings > Apps > Mail by turning off Personalize Smart Replies. The Phone app suggests calendar events or reminders based on voicemail transcripts; disabling this requires Settings > Apps > Phone and toggling off Suggestions in Voicemail. Live reservation details displayed during business calls are suppressed under Settings > Apps > Phone > Apple Intelligence & Siri by turning off Show When Calling. Journal app users can stop AI writing prompts via Settings > Apps > Journal and disabling Get Writing Prompts.

All Apple Intelligence processing relies on the Neural Engine embedded in the A17 Pro chip and newer Apple silicon. Devices lacking this hardware never receive the features, meaning older iPhones remain unaffected by the iOS 27 settings reorganization. For supported devices, Apple routes heavier computational requests through Private Cloud Compute, a server architecture designed to process data without storing or exposing it to human review, though users blocking external extensions ensure even that cloud relay remains unused.

Apple confirmed the decentralized settings structure during its September 2026 iOS 27 launch event, stating the distribution allows users to keep specific productivity features active while disabling others they find intrusive.
