Apple Finally Enters the Foldable Phone Race with iPhone Duo
Apple's iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro: Foldable Innovation vs. Variable Aperture Camera

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple has officially entered the foldable mobile device market with the debut of the “iPhone Duo,” marking the company’s first foray into a flexible display form factor and establishing direct competition with market pioneers such as Samsung Electronics. The unveiling, delivered during Apple’s latest hardware launch event, introduces a dual-screen design that shifts the tech giant’s flagship product line into a category it had long resisted.
Samsung established the commercial foldable market in 2019 with the release of the original Galaxy Fold, subsequently expanding the segment through its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series. Apple’s entry into the foldable space follows its historical pattern of delaying adoption of new hardware form factors until key component technologies mature. The company took a similar approach prior to adopting larger display formats with the iPhone 6 in 2014 and transition to edge-to-edge OLED displays with the iPhone X in 2017.
The iPhone Duo’s dramatic design pivot is widely expected to dominate consumer interest, potentially overshadowing the hardware advancements incorporated into the traditional slab-style iPhone 18 Pro. Alongside the novel foldable device, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro, which features an upgraded primary camera system built around a variable aperture mechanism.

Over the following years, competitors including Google, with its Pixel Fold, and Motorola, with its Razr series, built out competing foldable hardware ecosystems. The primary technical enhancement on the iPhone 18 Pro—its variable aperture camera system—utilizes mechanical blades inside the lens housing to physically adjust the size of the lens opening. This dynamic aperture control allows the camera to modulate the amount of physical light reaching the image sensor and alter hardware-level depth of field, reducing reliance on software-simulated background blur.
Media coverage following the announcement concentrated heavily on the strategic trade-offs between the two flagship offerings. In an event breakdown hosted by Engadget, senior reporter Karissa Bell and co-host Devindra Hardawar analyzed how Apple adapted the foldable form factor pioneered by Samsung, examining both the construction of the foldable hinge mechanism and how the high-profile release of the Duo alters the market positioning of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
While variable aperture technology has appeared in select mobile hardware in the past—including Samsung’s Galaxy S9 in 2018, which featured a dual f/1.5 and f/2.4 mechanical aperture, as well as recent flagships from Huawei and Xiaomi—its inclusion in the iPhone 18 Pro marks its debut in Apple’s pro-tier camera pipeline. The introduction of the iPhone Duo represents a key structural expansion for Apple’s smartphone strategy. The coverage, produced by Ryan Fernandez, highlighted how the dramatic visual shift of the iPhone Duo stands to draw the primary share of market scrutiny despite the core imaging upgrades presented in the 18 Pro.
