Tuchel Tracks Tavernier and a New Generation of England Candidates
Marcus Tavernier leads a wider group of uncapped players under consideration for England

LONDON — Thomas Tuchel is widening England’s scouting network before his first competitive matches as manager. The coaching staff is monitoring uncapped players from the Premier League and Championship ahead of fixtures against Spain, Czechia, and Croatia, with current domestic form and positional versatility influencing the evaluation process.
Bournemouth midfielder Marcus Tavernier has emerged as one of the leading candidates. The 27-year-old has scored three goals in his first four matches of the current campaign under Bournemouth manager Marco Rose, while his high work rate, defensive discipline, and ability to operate in several attacking roles have strengthened his case for a first senior international call-up.
Tuchel’s wider list includes Tavernier’s Bournemouth teammate Alex Scott, Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jack Hinshelwood, Everton’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Josh King. Scott joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023 after being named the EFL Championship Young Player of the Season, and the 21-year-old is regarded as one of England’s brightest midfield prospects because of his ball-carrying ability and vision.
Bellingham, the 19-year-old younger brother of Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham, has drawn praise for mature performances in the EFL Championship. The Sunderland midfielder has also shown a capacity for box-to-box play and offensive positioning. Hinshelwood, meanwhile, came through Brighton’s youth academy and has played as both a full-back and a central midfielder, earning caps at various England youth levels.
The Football Association appointed Tuchel after a transitional period in which the national team had been seeking to rebuild following recent tournament disappointments. Tuchel previously guided Chelsea to the Champions League title in 2021 and has managed Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. His teams are associated with structured pressing systems and a demand for tactical adaptability, qualities he will assess in competitive matches against Spain, Czechia, and Croatia.
Tavernier’s path to consideration began in Leeds, where he was born, and continued through the youth ranks at Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. He made his professional debut for Middlesbrough in 2017 and recorded 18 goals in 155 appearances for the North Yorkshire club before moving to Bournemouth in August 2022.
At Bournemouth, Tavernier has become a reliable Premier League performer known for direct running and intelligence between the lines. England staff had watched him closely during the final months of last season, and his current scoring run has further strengthened his case. The club is also represented in the broader evaluation pool by Scott.
Dewsbury-Hall, now at Everton, offers progressive passing and high-volume running, qualities that align with Tuchel’s transition-heavy tactical systems. The inclusion of him and the other rising players expands England’s depth beyond the traditional powerhouse clubs, while giving mid-table Premier League teams and top Championship sides a route into international consideration through consistent domestic performances.
Tuchel’s scouting initiative places Tavernier, Scott, Bellingham, Hinshelwood, Dewsbury-Hall, and King within a group of fresh options being assessed as he begins shaping England’s squad for the next international cycle.
