NWSL Skills Challenge 2026: USWNT Stars, Format and CBS Air Date
Six capped USWNT players join a cross-league roster competing in three technical drills for a $35,000 CarMax-sponsored prize pool in Virginia.

A $35,000 prize pool and a roster loaded with United States women’s national team veterans will headline the 2026 NWSL Skills Challenge, transforming the league’s championship weekend into a multi-day showcase rather than a single-game affair.
The event takes place Friday, Nov. 20, at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. Rather than airing live, the competition will be broadcast as a tape-delayed special on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ starting at 2 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, Nov. 28. That scheduling decision deliberately places the television debut one day after the USWNT opens the Concacaf W Championship against El Salvador, preventing any conflict for viewers or players involved in both tournaments.
Unlike traditional exhibition matches that often accompany major domestic soccer finals, the NWSL has structured this competition around three distinct technical drills designed to isolate specific fundamentals. The format mirrors skill showcases popularized by Major League Soccer’s All-Star events but adapts them strictly for women’s professional play.
In the Gauntlet, an attacking player has exactly 60 seconds to beat defenders and score on a series of mini-goals. Each target carries a different point value, forcing competitors to weigh risk against reward rather than simply rushing through a course. The Breakaway Circuit operates as a head-to-head relay where players receive a pass, navigate a cutback course and a nutmeg gate, then finish against an opposing goalkeeper. Precision Point strips away defensive pressure entirely, requiring teams to shoot at scoring zones within a standard goal, rewarding placement over power.
CarMax serves as the presenting sponsor funding the winning team’s payout. The corporate backing reflects a broader shift in how brands approach women’s sports properties. Rather than relying solely on jersey patches or stadium signage, sponsors are increasingly underwriting standalone entertainment content built around star athletes.

The confirmed participant list spans multiple franchises, specifically targeting clubs eliminated before the title match. This selection criteria ensures the event maintains high-level talent without distracting from the preparation of the two finalists competing on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Six capped USWNT players anchor the announced field: Claire Hutton of Bay FC, Racing Louisville FC forward Emma Sears, Jaedyn Shaw, Kansas City Current midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta, Washington Spirit’s Hal Hershfelt and Boston Legacy FC defender Lilly Reale.
They are joined by Chicago Stars FC’s Katie Atkinson, San Diego Wave FC’s Kenza Dali, Angel City FC’s Savvy King, Orlando Pride’s Ally Lemos, Denver Summit FC’s Carson Pickett, Portland Thorns FC’s Reyna Reyes and North Carolina Courage goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. Additional names will be released closer to the event to guarantee representation from every non-championship club.
Including a veteran goalkeeper like Sheridan signals that the Breakaway Circuit will feature legitimate shot-stopping resistance rather than serving as an open-net shooting gallery. Goalkeepers rarely receive dedicated spotlight segments during domestic league weekends, making her inclusion notable for positional representation.
For those attending in person at the Alexandria boarding school campus, gates open ahead of the 5:30 p.m. Eastern start time. Organizers have scheduled post-competition player meet-and-greets alongside fan activities including sign-making and face painting. The first 1,500 attendees will receive a branded coyote stuffed animal. Parking logistics and shuttle routes remain unannounced as of mid-October.
