Tesla to End Cybertruck Production in 2027, Pivots Texas Factory to Robotaxis
Texas factory shifts to Cybercab as pickup sales collapse and federal regulators investigate autonomous safety certification

Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Gigafactory Texas plant by mid-2027, clearing the assembly lines for mass production of the Cybercab, the company’s steering-wheel-free autonomous vehicle. Elon Musk confirmed the decision on X, calling the Cybertruck “an incredible technology development platform” that now “lives on through Cybercab.” Wes Morrill, the truck’s lead engineer, echoed that sentiment.

The move caps a turbulent run for the angular pickup. Since its late 2023 launch — years behind schedule — the Cybertruck has logged 11 recalls covering detaching light bars, accelerator pedal pads, and brake rotor stud holes. Sales never matched Musk’s initial forecast of 250,000 units a year. Kelley Blue Book figures show 38,965 U.S. deliveries in 2024, a 48% drop to 20,237 in 2025, and just 11,586 through the first three quarters of 2026.
Gigafactory Texas is currently the only plant equipped to build the Cybertruck. Tesla has not said whether production will shift elsewhere or simply end.
Meanwhile, Cybercab output is accelerating. Pilot production began in February 2026; mass production started in April at a line rated for more than 125,000 units annually. A paid robotaxi service using the two-seater opened in Austin last September, expanded to Dallas and Houston in April, reached Miami, Orlando, and Tampa in July, and arrived in Fort Worth by November. As of October 31, the Texas fleet numbered 1,204 vehicles — 573 Cybercabs and 631 Model Ys.
The rapid deployment has drawn federal scrutiny. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an Audit Query in September and, on September 10, issued a special order demanding sworn answers to 21 questions about how Tesla self-certified a vehicle without traditional human controls for compliance with federal safety standards.
Musk has argued that demand for Tesla vehicles is outpacing production, crediting growing adoption of the Full Self-Driving system. The Cybercab pivot reflects a broader bet: a global robotaxi network anchored in artificial intelligence and robotics rather than consumer pickups.
