Simeone-Mourinho Feud Explodes as Atlético Madrid Defeat 10-Man Real Madrid

VAR drama and red cards shape a combustible Madrid derby

The match was fractious from the opening whistle, with frequent confrontations between players and a card initially shown to Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham later reversed after a video assistant referee (VAR) consultation. At halftime, the tension spilled into the tunnels, where Atlético Madrid’s goalkeeper coach and Real Madrid’s assistant manager were both shown red cards.

The Madrid derby was the first for José Mourinho since his return to the Real Madrid helm, reviving his volatile technical-area rivalry with Atlético manager Diego Simeone. The two had not faced each other in this fixture for 13 years, since May 17, 2013, when Atlético defeated Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu to win the Copa del Rey.

At the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Mourinho’s tactical adjustments did little to energize Real Madrid’s attack. Kylian Mbappé remained largely isolated, and a double substitution after halftime failed to change the flow of the match. Real Madrid became uncharacteristically passive after going down to 10 men.

The decisive moment came early in the second half. Atlético defender David Hancko sent a long ball from deep toward Giuliano Simeone, the Atlético manager’s son, who raced behind the Real Madrid defense and into the penalty area. Teenage defender Dean Huijsen dragged the Argentine attacker down, and referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias pointed to the penalty spot.

A lengthy VAR review followed, focused on the color of the card rather than on whether the penalty should be awarded. Ortiz Arias upgraded the punishment to a straight red card for Huijsen. Álex Grimaldo then took the penalty, sending the ball past Thibaut Courtois to give the hosts the lead.

Mourinho later avoided discussing his team’s performance at the post-match press conference. Instead, he displayed printed images of two separate challenges involving Atlético players Lee Kang-in and Cristian Romero, arguing that both should have produced red cards for the home team and that the refereeing decisions determined the final result.

Atlético soon used its numerical advantage to extend the lead. South Korean international Lee Kang-in began the move by working the ball out to Giuliano Simeone on the right flank. Simeone sent a precise low cross into the six-yard box, where Canadian international striker Jonathan David turned it in for 2-0.

Real Madrid still produced a late response despite being reduced to 10 men. German defender Antonio Rüdiger headed in from a dead-ball delivery to make it 2-1, triggering a frantic finish. Real Madrid pushed for an equalizer but exposed itself to counter-attacks; Courtois made a sharp save to deny Atlético’s Cristian Romero, while French defender Ibrahima Konaté cleared Julián Álvarez’s effort off the line.

Simeone celebrated enthusiastically on the pitch at the final whistle and later told reporters that derby week in the Spanish capital carries a unique energy. The 2-1 victory keeps Atlético Madrid moving upward in La Liga after its recent domestic win over Real Sociedad. Real Madrid must regroup after its previous victory over Rayo Vallecano as the league title picture continues to develop.
