Aston Villa’s Matteo Ruggeri Out Over a Month With Hamstring Injury

The Italian wing-back's absence sidelines him from upcoming Champions League fixtures and the November international break.

Matteo Ruggeri’s rapid ascent at Aston Villa has stalled after the Italian wing-back suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him for more than a month, head coach Unai Emery confirmed Tuesday.

The setback occurred during Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Brentford. Emery addressed the timeline ahead of Aston Villa’s Champions League fixture against Fenerbahce, acknowledging the club lacks an exact return date but expects an absence stretching beyond four weeks.

Hamstring injuries in elite football typically require four to eight weeks of rehabilitation depending on the severity of the muscle tear. Grade 1 strains often allow players to return within a month, while Grade 2 tears frequently push recovery timelines toward six or eight weeks, particularly for positions demanding explosive acceleration and deceleration. Wing-backs operating in Emery’s system face heavy physical loads, as the role requires continuous high-speed transitions between defensive lines and advanced attacking positions along the entire flank.

The timing disrupts what had been a critical breakthrough stretch for the former Atalanta defender. Ruggeri earned his first Premier League starts in Aston Villa’s two most recent league matches bracketing the latest international window, signaling growing trust from Emery after his summer transfer.

His momentum extended to the international stage. Manager Roberto Mancini handed Ruggeri his senior debut for Italy on September 28, when the Azzurri defeated Turkey 4-1 away. He followed that appearance with another outing during the UEFA Nations League group phase match against Turkey on October 5 at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium in Bologna, where he registered shots on goal and demonstrated the overlapping runs that define his playing style.

Ruggeri will now miss the next international break beginning November 9. For Mancini, the absence removes a developing option on the left side of defense as Italy navigates the Nations League campaign. The Italian setup has relied heavily on versatile full-backs capable of providing width in possession, a tactical requirement that suited Ruggeri’s profile perfectly before the injury.

At club level, Emery must reshuffle his defensive options for both domestic and European commitments. Aston Villa acquired Ruggeri to add depth and dynamism to their backline, leveraging his experience in Serie A to adapt to the physical demands of English football. His unavailability forces the coaching staff to lean on alternative configurations during a congested autumn schedule featuring simultaneous Premier League and Champions League obligations.

Aston Villa travels to face Fenerbahce in Champions League action this week before returning to domestic competition.
