Roma’s €16M Balerdi gamble tested in Champions League

Injuries to Dybala and Koné force Gasperini into an emergency backline reshuffle for the must-win European fixture.

AS Roma’s late-summer transfer strategy faces its most consequential test Wednesday night. The club’s decision to acquire Leonardo Balerdi from Olympique Marseille on a loan deal structured with a conditional €16 million total obligation now directly impacts their survival in the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 League Phase.

Kickoff against Slovan Bratislava is scheduled for 20:00 UK time (21:00 CEST) at the Stadio Olimpico. A victory is mandatory. Roma currently sits without a win in the competition after drawing 1-1 away to Fenerbahce and surrendering a 3-1 lead in the 82nd minute to lose 4-3 to Real Madrid on Matchday 2.

Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has been forced into an emergency defensive restructure. Paulo Dybala and Manu Koné sustained injuries during the Madrid collapse and are unavailable. Goalkeeper Mile Svilar also misses the fixture. Midfielder Bryan Cristante returns to the bench, roughly one month after suffering a knee issue.

Balerdi shifts to a central defensive role for the evening. Daniele Ghilardi and Mario Hermoso flank him, replacing the standard partnerships involving Gianluca Mancini and Evan Ndicka. The Argentine center-back arrived only at the close of the transfer window.

“I feel good in any role in defence, we are all strong,” Balerdi told Sky Sport Italia. “Ghilardi and Hermoso immediately understand what we need to do, I get along with Mancini and Ndicka too, so it’s all good.”

The financial mechanics of his arrival underscore the pressure. Marseille agreed to release the defender on loan with an option to buy that converts into an obligation, capping the total cost at €16m. For a club navigating early European elimination risks, justifying that expenditure requires immediate on-field stabilization—something Roma failed to deliver in the final eight minutes against Madrid.

Gasperini’s tactical demands have accelerated Balerdi’s integration. The manager, known for rigid structural requirements honed over years in Serie A, relies heavily on center-backs capable of initiating build-up play under pressure.

“Gasperini is a great coach, he knows what he wants to do, I like his passion, the way he trains,” Balerdi told Sky Sport Italia. “It works, because we feel so much confidence on the field, and that’s important for a player.”

Roma’s front office has simultaneously pursued a specific recruitment demographic. Five Argentine players now occupy the squad. Balerdi, Nahuel Molina, and Santiago Castro were all secured during the summer window, expanding a South American contingent that management views as culturally and tactically cohesive.

“There are many Argentines at Roma, they wrote to me before I came here and gave me a great welcome,” Balerdi told Sky Sport Italia. Live coverage of the match, alongside Napoli-Bodo/Glimt, is available via the agency’s Liveblog.
