Real Madrid Circles Arsenal’s Zubimendi as January Move Takes Shape

Real Madrid is monitoring Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi ahead of the January transfer window, with the Spanish giants seeking a solution to persistent tactical imbalances in central midfield. Those concerns have followed the retirement of legendary playmaker Toni Kroos, whose decade-long tenure in Spain’s capital helped define the team’s tempo, control, and metronomic distribution.

Zubimendi’s situation at Arsenal has become less certain after the arrival of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes altered the hierarchy in the club’s engine room. Although Zubimendi adapted quickly to the Premier League and earned praise for his tactical intelligence, defensive cover, and ability to initiate transitions, he has not been guaranteed regular starting opportunities.

According to a report initially published by Caught Offside, Arsenal is preparing for an official approach from the reigning European champions. The North London club has set a financial framework for negotiations, valuing the 27-year-old Spain international at €70 million, approximately £60 million. That fee would allow Arsenal to fully recoup the amount paid to sign him from Real Sociedad.

Regular first-team minutes are understood to be a priority for Zubimendi because he wants to protect his prominent role with the Spanish national team. He became an increasingly important asset for Spain during Euro 2024, replacing the injured Rodri at halftime of the final against England and anchoring the midfield in a victory.

Real Madrid has dynamic midfield options in Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Federico Valverde, but manager Carlo Ancelotti’s squad has at times lacked a traditional deep-lying orchestrator, or “regista,” who can dictate possession in high-stakes domestic and European fixtures. Real Madrid’s technical staff views Zubimendi’s composure under pressure, positional discipline, and efficiency in build-up play as a close match for that role.

Before moving to England, Zubimendi spent his entire professional career at Real Sociedad after progressing through the club’s youth academy at Zubieta. Under manager Imanol Alguacil, he made more than 180 appearances for the Basque club, helping it win the 2020 Copa del Rey and secure consistent qualification for European competitions.

The midfielder’s familiarity with the rhythm and tactical demands of Spanish football has kept him attractive to Real Madrid, which closely tracked his development in La Liga before his departure to England. Senior officials in Madrid reportedly believe his style remains aligned with the team’s structural needs.

A mid-season transfer of this scale would be difficult because of squad disruption and limited preparation time. Arsenal’s €70 million valuation nevertheless provides a concrete starting point, while recouping £60 million would help the club maintain compliance with the Premier League’s strict Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The figure would also give sporting director Richard Garlick and Arsenal’s executive team flexibility in future transfer windows.

Whether a deal materializes in January will depend largely on how Mikel Arteta manages his midfield rotation during the demanding autumn and winter schedule. If Zubimendi re-establishes himself as an indispensable starter in North London, the speculation may subside. If he remains on the periphery of the starting eleven, Real Madrid appears prepared to test Arsenal’s resolve when the transfer window reopens.
