Nkunku Scores First Perfect Bundesliga Hat-Trick for Leipzig

The French forward's six goal involvements in seven matches follow a grueling international break spent rebuilding his fitness away from the spotlight.

Christopher Nkunku delivered the first perfect hat-trick in RB Leipzig’s decade-long Bundesliga history last weekend, dismantling Eintracht Frankfurt with three consecutive goals in a single half during a 6-0 victory. The performance signals more than a temporary hot streak for the French forward; it marks the definitive end of a three-year physical and professional struggle that began the moment he left Saxony.

The 28-year-old’s return to Leipzig this season has already produced six goal involvements across seven matches. That immediate impact stands in stark contrast to his turbulent departure from the club. When Chelsea paid approximately €60 million to sign him in the summer of 2023, Nkunku arrived as the reigning Bundesliga top scorer and Player of the Season. Instead of replicating that dominance in England, persistent injuries prevented him from establishing any consistent rhythm at Stamford Bridge.

A subsequent move to AC Milan last season offered little relief. Demoted within the squad hierarchy and lacking match fitness, Nkunku managed competent but unremarkable performances in Serie A. The root issue was not a sudden decline in technical ability — his original stint at Leipzig yielded 70 goals and 56 assists over 172 competitive appearances — but rather an inability to maintain the physical baseline required to execute at an elite level.

The turning point came during the recent three-week international break. Rather than resting, Nkunku remained in Leipzig to work with a personal trainer and integrate into additional sessions at the Red Bull training facility. For a player whose career trajectory had been derailed by recurring muscular setbacks, the decision prioritized long-term durability over short-term recovery.

Physical rehabilitation alone did not unlock his current form. Manager Martín Demichelis restructured Leipzig’s attacking shape specifically to maximize Nkunku’s profile. Operating directly behind center-forward Rômulo, the 18-cap France international now functions in the spaces between the opposition’s midfield and defensive lines. This role eliminates the need for him to act as a traditional target man or isolated winger, instead allowing him to dictate link-up play before making late surges into the penalty area.

Leipzig’s tactical familiarity with Nkunku provides an advantage no other European club currently holds. The organization understands his movement patterns, injury thresholds, and optimal positioning because he developed them there between 2019 and 2023. Captain David Raum publicly reinforced that internal confidence following the Frankfurt rout, describing Nkunku as a massive asset when fully operational.

The resurgence mirrors a broader pattern in the modern transfer market where players returning to former clubs frequently outperform their initial stints elsewhere. Niclas Füllkrug experienced a similar trajectory upon returning to familiar German environments after struggling abroad, though Nkunku’s ceiling remains significantly higher given his age and historical output.

RB Leipzig next tests Nkunku’s restored fitness against Bayern Munich, a fixture that will measure whether his current run represents a genuine return to his 2023 peak or merely a favorable opening stretch.
