Cedar Park Faces Vandegrift as Week 8 Texas Football Heats Up

Anderson extends its Shoal Creek Showdown streak while 6A and 5A districts tighten with three weeks left before the UIL playoffs.

The Austin-area high school football playoff picture sharpened dramatically Friday night as district races across Central Texas produced blowouts, rivalry milestones and a string of tightly contested matchups during Week 8 of the 2026 season.

With only four local programs on bye this week, the slate was nearly full. The most scrutinized matchup featured undefeated Cedar Park traveling to face Vandegrift in District 24-6A. The Timberwolves entered the game having survived a narrow 37-35 test against Hutto at Gupton Stadium the previous Friday, a contest where junior Kysen Pham proved instrumental in securing the win. That victory kept Cedar Park unblemished but exposed vulnerabilities that opponents in the final stretch of the regular season are actively studying. Under the University Interscholastic League’s alignment, which governs Texas public school athletics through the 2024-2026 cycle, Class 6A is divided into Division I and Division II brackets for the postseason based on enrollment size. Every remaining district game directly impacts seeding and whether a team plays its opening playoff rounds at home.

District 26-6A also delivered a pivotal clash between Bowie and Dripping Springs at Tiger Stadium. Both programs have spent recent seasons building rosters capable of deep November runs, making their head-to-head meeting a likely determinant for the district’s upper tier. Across town, Pflugerville hosted Bastrop in a District 12-5A Division II contest at Memorial Stadium, adding another layer to the region’s crowded 5A landscape where margin for error is virtually nonexistent.

Thursday night provided an early jolt to the week when Anderson defeated McCallum 21-9 in District 13-5A Division I action at House Park. Known locally as the Shoal Creek Showdown, the rivalry historically anchored the first Thursday of the season as a non-district opener. The UIL’s realignment process shifted it into a mid-season conference game, altering the dynamic but not the outcome. The Trojans secured their fifth consecutive victory over the Knights, extending a streak that has defined the series in recent years.

Several other programs used Friday to assert dominance or build momentum heading into the final weeks before the postseason begins in early November.

In District 24-6A, East View edged Vista Ridge 40-37, a shootout that keeps both teams fighting for positioning near the top of the standings. Glenn handled Connally 49-14 in District 12-5A Division I, while Crockett shut out Navarro 55-0 in District 12-5A Division II. In Class 4A Division I play within District 13-4A, Canyon Lake overwhelmed Northeast 70-6.

Teams across Central Texas now have three weeks remaining in the regular season to finalize their postseason berths. District championship implications will intensify next Friday as the penultimate week of conference play approaches, forcing programs like Cedar Park, Vandegrift and Dripping Springs to navigate increasingly desperate opponents fighting for survival.
