LeBron in Philly, Brunson’s Ring Night: Knicks Open With 106-100 Loss
Walt Frazier presented rings to the defending champions before LeBron James and the 76ers spoiled the night with a 106-100 win.

LeBron James wore a Philadelphia 76ers uniform at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The four-time MVP, now listed as a forward for the Sixers according to game imagery from USA Today, helped spoil what was supposed to be a coronation for the defending champion New York Knicks.
Philadelphia walked out with a 106-100 victory in the NBA season opener. The final score landed quietly after hours of pregame pageantry that stretched back more than half a century.
Knicks broadcaster Mike Breen emceed the championship ring ceremony, according to USA Today. Rather than leaning solely on current executives, the franchise brought in players from its early 1970s title teams to present rings to the front office and coaching staff. Walt “Clyde” Frazier, the Hall of Fame point guard who anchored those 1970 and 1973 championships, personally handed the rings to the current roster.

The gap between those 1970s banners and the newly raised 2025-26 championship flag represents one of the longest droughts in major North American professional sports. Connecting Frazier directly to Jalen Brunson during the handoff bridged 53 years of organizational frustration in a single gesture.

Brunson, wearing No. 11, inspected his new hardware before tip-off. He later spoke with Rick Brunson, his father and a member of the Knicks’ coaching staff, according to USA Today. The younger Brunson then laced up his sneakers and took the floor for the first quarter against a Sixers team bolstered by James.

James, wearing No. 23, was photographed on the court before the start of the second quarter. His presence in a 76ers jersey fundamentally alters the Atlantic Division math heading into the 2026-27 schedule. Defending champions rarely face an opponent on opening night carrying that level of offseason acquisition weight.

Outside the arena, fans interacted with replica championship rings. A video presentation broadcast inside the building showed supporters wrapping themselves in a replica of the championship banner before the actual cloth was hoisted into the MSG rafters.

Opening night losses for reigning champions are historically common. The extended ceremonies often leave home teams emotionally spent before the first whistle. New York’s defense of its title now begins with a deficit in the standings against a division rival that arrived in Manhattan with a drastically reshaped roster.
