Google Adds Offline Gemini and Wider Scam Detection to Pixel Devices
Pixel devices gain broader fraud protection, offline Gemini, and new wearable controls
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google’s latest feature update for Pixel devices brings Wear OS 7 to all Pixel Watch 5 devices and expands automated fraud prevention across 10 international markets. The release also adds offline artificial intelligence capabilities and expanded gesture controls to Google’s wearable software.
On Pixel Watch 5, users can access Google’s Gemini AI assistant without an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection, generating queries and viewing personalized responses offline. The wearable software patch also improves GPS route tracking accuracy during outdoor navigation and athletic activities.
Pixel 6 models and newer receive expanded home screen widgets for daily contact management. These widgets allow single-tap calling or text messaging to designated favorite contacts or VIPs directly from the main display. A separate visual notification system adds distinct home screen badging for unread communications from VIP contacts and high-priority incoming alerts.
Google’s AI-driven Scam Detection now extends protective monitoring across third-party chat applications in notification interfaces. The feature is active in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan, and France.
In the United States, the fraud detection system operates within Google’s Gboard virtual keyboard interface. It analyzes incoming text and flags suspicious or potentially fraudulent messages in real time as users view messages or type replies. The tools use on-device machine learning processed through the dedicated Neural Processing Units built into Google’s custom Tensor processors, allowing the system to detect phishing and social engineering attempts without sending message contents to external servers.
The smartwatch update adds more single-handed gesture controls. A double-pinch motion can open the watch face notification center, scroll through Gemini AI responses, display digital payment cards in Google Wallet, and move through Google Maps business reviews. Turning the wrist remains the standard gesture for navigating back to a previous menu screen.
Google is also introducing media branding options for Pixel 6 and newer handsets through Harry Potter Audiobook Packs. The packs apply franchise-themed wallpapers, customized app iconography, and customized audio alerts connected to the new audiobook releases.
Eligible Pixel owners in 10 regions will receive a two-month complimentary subscription to Amazon’s Audible service. The regions are the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan, and Australia.
Google introduced its periodic “Feature Drop” update model in December 2019, delivering post-launch functional enhancements directly to its hardware independently of annual Android operating system version updates. The current rollout continues the company’s effort to tightly integrate hardware features, custom silicon processing, and cloud-adjacent AI models across its smartphone and smartwatch portfolio.
