Freeport Halloween Train of TERROR: 2026 Dates and Tickets
The cash-only haunted flatcar ride runs three Friday nights in October from a South Walnut Road track in Stephenson County.

A cash-only, flatcar-based haunted rail experience is preparing for its 2026 run in Stephenson County. The Halloween Train of TERROR will operate out of Freeport, Illinois, on three consecutive Friday nights this October, drawing thrill-seekers to a stretch of track at 2954 S. Walnut Road.
Departures are scheduled for Oct. 17, Oct. 24 and Oct. 31. Operations begin at 6 p.m. each evening, with trains leaving the station every hour. Final departure times depend entirely on demand; organizers will continue dispatching runs only as long as ticket sales justify another trip.
Admission is set at a flat rate of $10 per rider regardless of age. Unlike traditional haunted houses where visitors walk through scenes at their own pace, this attraction moves guests along a fixed rail route on open-air flatcars. That format requires strict boarding logistics. Tickets are distributed sequentially on a first-come, first-served basis, with color-coded passes assigned by specific flatcar to manage passenger flow and prevent overcrowding on the narrow rolling stock.
Because inventory for each hourly slot is finite, the box office operates on a rolling capacity model. Staff will not open sales for a later departure until the preceding train has completely sold out. Groups intending to ride together must notify organizers before purchasing tickets so seating can be coordinated on the same flatcar.
Passengers are instructed to arrive no later than 15 minutes before their designated departure. Once a train is called, boarding begins immediately, and the event enforces a strict no-refund policy for riders who step away and miss their window.
The venue does not accept credit or debit cards. All transactions must be completed in cash, requiring visitors to plan ahead or use ATMs located at nearby banks in Freeport before arriving at the Walnut Road site.
Freeport sits roughly 115 miles northwest of Chicago and maintains deep historical ties to American railroading. The city was a critical junction for the Illinois Central Railroad during the 19th century, and seasonal heritage rail events remain a fixture of local tourism. Haunted train rides have proliferated across the Midwest over the past two decades, capitalizing on decommissioned spurs, industrial sidings and active short-line tracks to offer immersive horror experiences that static attractions cannot replicate. The combination of darkness, motion and outdoor isolation distinguishes these rail-based haunts from conventional warehouse mazes.
The 2954 S. Walnut Road location will host all three nights of the 2026 schedule. Riders should anticipate mid-October temperatures in northern Illinois frequently dropping into the 40s after sunset, making heavy clothing advisable for an extended period outdoors on an unenclosed railcar.
