2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC53 Returns Six-Cylinder Power to Compact Performance SUV Lineup

In a notable shift for its midtier performance offerings, Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the 2027 AMG GLC53, restoring a multi-cylinder powertrain to its compact performance SUV lineup. Replacing the four-cylinder AMG GLC43, the new vehicle features an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-6 engine engineered with forced induction and hybrid technology.
The move comes after mixed market responses to the brand’s aggressive downsizing strategy across the C-Class and GLC families, where four-cylinder plug-in hybrid setups replaced larger displacement engines across several trims. With the introduction of the GLC53, performance enthusiasts regain the acoustic and mechanical characteristics of a six-cylinder engine within Affalterbach’s compact luxury crossover family.
Under the hood, the 3.0-liter inline-6 engine integrates both an electric supercharger and a traditional exhaust-gas turbocharger. This twin-charged setup delivers 443 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque under standard operating conditions, with maximum torque increasing to 472 pound-feet during overboost. Peak horsepower arrives between 5,500 and 6,100 rpm, while peak torque is accessible as low as 2,200 rpm.
To bolster acceleration and reduce turbo lag, the powertrain incorporates a 48-volt mild-hybrid system featuring an integrated starter-generator (ISG). The electric motor contributes an additional 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of low-end torque. Power is routed through an AMG-tuned 9-speed torque-converter automatic transmission to an all-wheel drive system.
Electrically driven superchargers are increasingly utilized in high-output mild-hybrid setups to build boost pressure rapidly before conventional exhaust turbochargers spool up, ensuring instantaneous throttle response across the rev range.
For the first time on an AMG crossover, buyers can equip the GLC53 with an optional electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential that unlocks a dedicated Drift Mode. This system allows a greater proportion of power to be directed to the rear wheels, bringing a dynamic capability traditionally reserved for rear-wheel-biased performance sedans to the SUV segment.

Inside, drivers navigate system parameters using an 11.9-inch central touchscreen. While providing granular control over throttle mapping, exhaust acoustics, and suspension calibration across multiple drive modes, the infotainment interface relies on the outgoing MBUX framework rather than the newer MB.OS architecture debuted on flagships like the S-Class. Dynamic tuning across drive modes remains performance-oriented, preserving a firm ride even in Comfort mode settings.

For the model’s inaugural year, Mercedes-AMG will offer a special Golden Accents Package. Available exclusively with Obsidian Black Metallic or Graphite Grey Magno paint, the package adds Techgold accents to the 21-inch matte black wheels, subtle AMG door graphics, and black brake calipers with white AMG badging. It also bundles the dark-finished AMG Night Package with the AMG Performance Studio Package, which adds a larger front splitter, modified roof spoiler extension, and high-gloss black rear diffuser.

The 2027 AMG GLC53 is slated to reach U.S. dealerships during the second half of the year in both traditional SUV and sloped Coupe body styles. Official pricing has not been announced, but market placement will sit between the outgoing $68,900 AMG GLC43 SUV and the flagship $88,100 AMG GLC63 S E Performance SUV, with Coupe variants expected to command a $6,000 to $10,000 premium over standard SUV models.
