iPhone 18 Pro Max: Apple’s Battery Ambitions Hit a Physical Ceiling

Leaked dimensions suggest a heavier, thicker flagship for 2026.

Apple’s pursuit of longer battery life for its upcoming flagship appears to be coming at the expense of ergonomics. According to industry insider Ice Universe, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to reach a weight of 240 grams, making it one of the heaviest mainstream handsets ever produced.

The device is projected to measure 9 mm in thickness, an increase of 0.25 mm over its predecessor. While seemingly marginal, these physical gains represent a significant shift in hardware design for a company that historically prioritized slim profiles.

This bulk is largely attributed to the inclusion of a larger internal battery. However, Apple’s reliance on traditional lithium-ion chemistry stands in contrast to shifting trends in the smartphone industry.

Competitors such as Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi have begun integrating silicon-carbon batteries, which offer higher energy density in smaller footprints. These high-density cells allow for capacities reaching 7,500 mAh without the proportional increases in weight and volume currently facing Apple.

The disparity is most evident when compared to the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Despite featuring a similar 6.9 inches display, the Samsung flagship reportedly weighs 213 grams and measures 7.9 mm in thickness—nearly 30 grams lighter and a full millimeter thinner than the projected iPhone 18 Pro Max.

It remains unclear if the increased battery density will translate into record-breaking battery life or if the extra power is required to offset the energy demands of new internal components.

Apple’s decision to bypass mature silicon-carbon technology suggests a conservative approach to battery safety and supply chain management, even as it pushes the physical limits of its premium hardware.
