Newcastle United are closing in on the acquisition of Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek after moving to activate the €30 million (£25.7 million) release clause in his contract. Negotiations between the two clubs have progressed to finalize payment terms for the 24-year-old Czech international, addressing a core target in Newcastle’s transfer window strategy.
The pursuit follows a broader recalibration of Newcastle’s goalkeeping department. The club chose not to activate a permanent option on Aaron Ramsdale after his loan spell from Southampton, while an avenue for James Trafford closed when Leeds United reached a £40 million agreement with Manchester City for his transfer. With established starter Nick Pope entering the later stages of his career, Hornicek is targeted as a direct investment in long-term position management.
Hornicek established himself as Braga’s first-choice keeper during the 2024-25 season, accumulating 88 senior appearances for the Primeira Liga side. His career path began with a decade in the youth academy of Pardubice before he transferred to Portugal in 2019, initially joining Braga on loan prior to securing a permanent contract.
Contractual release clauses are standard structural mechanisms across Portuguese football, allowing clubs like Braga to maintain contractual leverage while operating within self-sustaining player trading frameworks. This model routinely facilitates structured transitions for domestic talent into top-tier European leagues and UEFA club tournaments.
On the international stage, Hornicek earned his senior debut for the Czech Republic in May and was subsequently named in the nation’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. Although he did not feature on the pitch before his country was eliminated in the group stage, the call-up marked his entry into senior international selection.
