Apple Targeting 2027 Launch for Smart Glasses with Advanced Privacy Controls

Cupertino seeks to address recording concerns that plagued Meta as competition heats up with Samsung.

As tech giants race to establish a foothold in the wearable artificial intelligence market, Apple is developing lightweight smart glasses designed around stringent hardware and software privacy safeguards. According to details reported by Bloomberg, the Cupertino company is actively testing prototypes intended to reassure the public against non-consensual recording—a challenge that has consistently shadowed rival wearable devices.

The move places Apple in direct competition with Meta’s established Ray-Ban smart glasses and an upcoming wearable offering from Samsung. While early head-worn computing focused on immersive spatial headsets like the Apple Vision Pro, the broader industry is increasingly shifting toward lightweight daily frames capable of capturing ambient audio and processing real-world visual surroundings.

Privacy concerns have proven to be the primary hurdle for broad consumer acceptance of smart eyewear since the initial public reaction to Google Glass over a decade ago. Meta recently took aggressive measures to preserve public trust in its smart eyewear, rolling out software updates that disable frames if their recording indicator light is altered or obscured. Meta has also begun removing social media accounts found uploading footage recorded without subjects’ consent.

Apple reportedly evaluated releasing a camera-free version of its smart glasses to eliminate surveillance anxieties entirely. However, leadership ultimately decided to include integrated visual sensors to leverage artificial intelligence capabilities. The integrated cameras will allow onboard system intelligence to interpret real-time surroundings, answer queries about visible objects, and interact directly with user environments.

Internal schedules point toward an official presentation at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2027. Unveiling the technology at its annual developer conference will mirror Apple’s launch framework for past hardware platforms, allowing software creators time to build compatible applications before a retail release planned for around September 2027.

In addition to visual AI assistance, the glasses are expected to include built-in open-ear speakers and microphones to support music playback, voice calling, and notification readouts through Siri. Details regarding consumer pricing and whether Apple plans to offer distinct design variants remain unannounced.
