Anthropic Unveils Claude Opus 5, Bringing High-End AI Performance Without Price Increases

Artificial intelligence safety and research firm Anthropic has released Claude Opus 5, a flagship artificial intelligence model designed to deliver frontier-level reasoning and autonomous task execution without driving up developer costs. Led by Chief Executive Dario Amodei, the company structured the model to bridge the gap between high-end capability and operational efficiency, offering near-parity with its top-tier Fable 5 system at half the expense.
The pricing strategy represents a notable shift in enterprise AI deployment, where advancing model performance typically corresponds to escalating infrastructure costs. Developers integrating Claude Opus 5 via Anthropic’s API will pay $5 per million input tokens—roughly equivalent to processing 750,000 words—and $25 per million output tokens, matching the exact pricing structure of its predecessor, Opus 4.8. For end users, the new architecture replaces previous options as the default model in Claude Max and becomes the most capable system available to Claude Pro subscribers.
Performance benchmarks highlight significant improvements in complex software development, an area where Anthropic models have established a strong presence among engineering teams. On standardized programming tests, Opus 5 achieves double the performance score of Opus 4.8 while simultaneously reducing the financial cost per completed task on evaluation suites such as Frontier-Bench v0.1. Beyond coding, the model demonstrates enhanced capabilities in agentic search, computer environment navigation, multi-step logical reasoning, graphic generation, and scientific inquiries, with targeted gains in biological research.
To accommodate high-speed deployment needs, Anthropic is also introducing an optional fast mode for API integration. This feature increases processing speed at double the standard API rate and requires greater credit consumption within Claude Code. Alongside speed adjustments, the company embedded enhanced system safeguards into Opus 5 to reduce vulnerability to manipulative prompts and accidental misuse. While Anthropic’s specialized Mythos architecture retains a higher baseline for dedicated cybersecurity applications, Opus 5 integrates tighter risk controls than earlier iterations, reflecting growing industry emphasis on safe deployment standards for autonomous AI systems.
