Baby Food Pouches Recalled Nationwide Over Plastic Contamination Risk

PT Organics Limited has initiated a voluntary recall of select Peter Rabbit Organics baby food pouches distributed nationwide, following the discovery of a packaging defect that could introduce plastic fragments into the food. The recall, which was published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, affects specific batches of Pumpkin Tree Peter Rabbit Organics Banana & Strawberry fruit purée.

The affected four-ounce (113-gram) pouches were sold at major retail chains, including Target, Kroger, and Meijer, between March 6 and July 13. According to the Lake Oswego, Oregon-based company, the issue is isolated to this specific flavor and packaging run, and no other Pumpkin Tree products or flavors are involved in the recall.

The recall was triggered after the company’s packaging supplier identified a defect in a recent production run of pouches. Subsequent inspections of the finished products confirmed that some pouches contained a strand of soft, food-grade plastic attached to the inner lining of the packaging. PT Organics emphasized that the issue stems entirely from the packaging material itself rather than the fruit purée inside.

Physical contaminants in food products, particularly those intended for infants and toddlers, present a significant choking hazard. While food-grade plastic is non-toxic, its presence in puréed food is treated with high urgency by food safety regulators. Under the Food Safety Modernization Act, manufacturers are expected to maintain strict preventive controls over their supply chains, including packaging materials, to prevent such foreign material contamination. To date, PT Organics has received no reports of injuries or illnesses associated with the recalled pouches.

Consumers can identify the recalled products by examining the back of the pouches. The affected items feature the barcode 8 15367 01078 0 and a lane number of 4 printed on the rear right-hand side seam. The recall covers products with the following best-by dates stamped in black ink: January 19, 2027; January 20, 2027; March 17, 2027; March 18, 2027; May 14, 2027; and May 15, 2027.

Major retail chains like Kroger and Target frequently employ automated systems at checkout lanes to block the sale of recalled inventory, but consumers who purchased these items prior to the recall announcement are urged not to consume them or feed them to children.
