OpenAI Enters Hardware Market with $230 Developer Console Built by Work Louder

OpenAI has launched its first physical hardware product, partnering with custom keyboard manufacturer Work Louder to release the Codex Micro. Priced at $230, the device is a specialized control console designed specifically for developers and power users of OpenAI’s Codex programming platform.
Rather than launching a mass-market consumer gadget, the company’s debut in the physical product space targets professionals who integrate artificial intelligence deeply into their coding workflows. The console functions similarly to popular macro pads, but it is deeply integrated with the ChatGPT application and Codex’s API.
The device features customizable keys, a touch sensor, a joystick, and a physical dial that allows users to adjust the AI’s reasoning level in real-time. This mechanical control offers a tactile way to manage complex programming tasks without relying solely on keyboard shortcuts or on-screen menus.
A standout feature of the Codex Micro is its ability to monitor autonomous AI agents. The device includes six translucent, color-coded keys that illuminate to reflect the real-time status of active agents. For example, a blue light indicates the AI is processing or “thinking,” orange signals that the system requires user approval to proceed, green denotes unread messages, and red warns of an error. This allows developers to track background tasks without constantly switching windows on their computer screens.
While rumors have long circulated about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman collaborating with legendary former Apple designer Jony Ive on a consumer AI device, this developer-focused debut represents a much more targeted strategy. By catering to “power users,” the company is tapping into its most active developer base. The move comes as tech giants increasingly look for physical touchpoints to integrate generative AI into daily professional workflows.
According to Work Louder, the Codex Micro is being sold as a limited-edition release. Once the initial production run is sold out, the companies do not plan to manufacture additional units. The device comes with interchangeable keycaps featuring icons for various Codex actions, which can be configured directly through the software.
