Motorsport Engineering Meets Geopolitical Intelligence in NATO's €1 Billion Venture Fund

The NATO Innovation Fund has brought together operators from elite motorsport engineering and Central and Eastern European security risk analysis. Among its leadership is Senior Associate David Ordonez, who spent years in Formula 1 engineering before entering venture finance with the fund. His background includes designing race-winning vehicles and serving at the Alpine F1 Team, where he managed data analytics to optimize aerodynamic and mechanical performance under competitive race conditions. The fund is backed by 24 NATO allies and tasked with identifying early-stage startups in defense, security, and resilience sectors across member nations.
Partner Patrick Schneider-Sikorsky joined the fund after founding and managing Beast Ventures, an early-stage venture firm focused on frontier technologies and deep tech. Before his career in technology investing, he worked in foreign policy and spent several years in corporate intelligence and security consulting, advising multinational corporations navigating political, operational, and regulatory environments in Central and Eastern Europe. The 15-year fund is structured to provide patient capital to sectors that traditional venture capital often overlooks due to high capital requirements and lengthy development cycles.

The fund targets critical technology domains including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, quantum technologies, novel materials, energy infrastructure, space technologies, and biotechnology. Established formally during the 2022 NATO Summit in Madrid and operationalized with headquarters in the Netherlands, the €1 billion ($1.1 billion) initiative is the world’s first multi-sovereign venture capital fund. It works in tandem with the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA), NATO’s complementary accelerator program that provides non-dilutive grants, test centers, and mentorship to dual-use technology developers.
David Ordonez’s background also includes developing and integrating instrumentation for wind tunnel testing. While DIANA focuses on early validation and testing, the NATO Innovation Fund operates on commercial terms, taking direct equity stakes in companies and investing in venture funds across participating allied nations. The integration of engineering and geopolitical intelligence comes as the fund builds out its portfolio of direct equity investments and fund-of-funds commitments.
Through its hybrid operational model, the fund seeks to bridge the gap between commercial deep-tech ecosystems in North America and Europe and the operational requirements of allied defense networks. The fund has brought together operators with backgrounds in specialized venture building to evaluate complex hardware, software, and cross-border security challenges. Patrick Schneider-Sikorsky’s portfolio includes corporate intelligence work advising multinationals in Central and Eastern Europe before his pivot to deep-tech venture capital.
