Arsenal Face Ben White Decision Before Ipswich Cup Clash

Arsenal’s trip to Portman Road for the Carabao Cup fixture against Ipswich Town has put Mikel Arteta’s defensive depth under scrutiny. Ben White was absent from the team’s latest training session, raising questions about his availability for the midweek match as Premier League managers weigh rotation against a congested multi-competition calendar.

White had started all six of Arsenal’s competitive matches this season after joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £50 million transfer in 2021. That run included the season-opening FA Community Shield victory over Manchester City at Wembley Stadium, although his consecutive starts were interrupted in last weekend’s 2-0 Premier League win over Sunderland.

Arteta had selected the same starting eleven for a second consecutive league match against Sunderland. White began showing signs of physical discomfort from a groin issue late in the first half and was replaced at halftime by Dutch international Jurrien Timber, who played the remainder of the match.

Timber is the most direct right-back alternative if White is rested. Arsenal signed him from Ajax in 2023 for a reported £34 million, but an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered during the opening weekend of the 2023–24 Premier League campaign kept him out for nearly all of his debut season in North London. His return to full fitness this season has given Arteta tactical flexibility across the backline.

The timing of White’s decision is also linked to the upcoming international break. The pause in domestic league play provides a window for recovery, while any decision could affect potential discussions about White’s international status. He has historically had a complex relationship with the England national team and previously stepped away from international duty.

Arsenal may soon have another defensive option. Cristhian Mosquera has been sidelined since suffering an injury against Aston Villa on August 31, but he has continued to make progress in his rehabilitation. Arteta said a return to competitive action was imminent.

“He’s doing really well,” Arteta said of Mosquera’s status. “Let’s see if he can get this game or the next one. It will be around that time I think.”

The Carabao Cup has traditionally allowed Premier League managers to rotate their squads and blood younger players. Ipswich Town, however, will play in front of a passionate home crowd at Portman Road and will look to exploit any instability in an Arsenal defense that has otherwise shown remarkable resilience during the early stages of the domestic campaign.
