Liverpool’s Late Surge Turns Atlético’s Lead Into Anfield Defeat

LIVERPOOL, England — Atlético Madrid lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday in its opening match of the 2026–27 UEFA Champions League league phase. The result extended Atlético’s difficult run in away fixtures against English opposition during the Champions League’s initial phases.

Pablo Barrios was one of Atlético’s few bright spots, winning eight of his 12 duels and repeatedly breaking through Liverpool’s initial press to launch transition plays. Koke completed 37 of his 40 passes, but the veteran club captain had minimal defensive impact against Liverpool’s physical midfield. Álex Baena sent two long-range shot attempts over the crossbar, while Lee Kang-in created one chance before being substituted in the 59th minute.

Atlético opened the scoring through a counter-attacking sequence started by Julián Álvarez. Liverpool gradually took command of possession after adjusting its high press following the opening 20 minutes. Atlético’s midfield struggled to establish possession or sustain forward momentum as the hosts began breaking down the Spanish side’s defensive structure.

The equalizer came when defender Ronald Araújo used a backheel to release Dominik Szoboszlai, who finished into the bottom corner. Marc Pubill struggled against Liverpool’s wide pressure and picked up a yellow card during a difficult opening stint. Giuliano Simeone was bypassed in the buildup to a late Liverpool goal that was ultimately disallowed.

Simeone responded to Liverpool’s momentum by bringing on Canadian international forward Jonathan David for his official debut with the club. Atlético also introduced Alejandro Grimaldo, Ademola Lookman, Morten Hjulmand, and Robin Le Normand, but the late tactical shifts did not produce an equalizing goal before the final whistle.
