Bills’ Gardner-Johnson Suspended: Cost, Schedule, Appeal Options

Bills safety out one game; secondary injury concerns mount

The Buffalo Bills will be without C.J. Gardner-Johnson for their next game. The NFL suspended the safety without pay for one game after he spat at an opponent during Sunday’s contest against the Las Vegas Raiders, an official statement posted to X by Ian Rapoport said.

The violation falls under Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which covers any act contrary to generally understood principles of sportsmanship. The suspension took effect Monday, October 26.

The timing matters more than the one-game number. Gardner-Johnson becomes eligible to return to the active roster Monday, November 2, after Buffalo’s November 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. That sequence leaves the Bills’ secondary short-handed for the Ravens game at a point when health was already a concern.

The Bills were dealing with injury issues in the secondary. ClutchPoints reported the team brought back Tre’Davious White amid the roster turmoil, a move that underscores how thin depth becomes once Gardner-Johnson is unavailable.

A one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct is relatively light compared with other NFL penalties, but the financial sting is direct: no pay for the missed contest. The Collective Bargaining Agreement governs how the suspension is applied and what comes next.

Gardner-Johnson may appeal the suspension. Any appeal will be heard and decided by one of four hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA: Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash.

The incident occurred in the second quarter of the Raiders game. The NFL statement did not expand on the sequence of events beyond identifying the act as spitting at an opponent.
