Booking.com 2027 Travel Trends: Why U.S. Tourists Are Ditching Friends

Survey data shows 41% of travelers have cut people from group trips over spending differences as mood-based booking overtakes traditional itineraries.

U.S. travelers are severing friendships over vacation budgets and abandoning curated itineraries, according to Booking.com’s 11th annual Travel Predictions released Oct. 14, 2026. The data signals a structural shift in how Americans plan leisure trips for 2027, prioritizing emotional regulation and financial boundaries over traditional sightseeing or group harmony.

The survey of 28,230 global travelers, conducted in July and August 2026, reveals that 53% of respondents have reconsidered who to invite on a trip due to spending disparities, while 41% have outright removed people from group travel plans. Among U.S. parents, 67% specifically want child-free vacations to redirect funds toward themselves.

Financial friction among travel companions has escalated beyond temporary disagreements. A separate 2025 Experian survey found that one in five Gen Z and millennial travelers ended a friendship entirely over money disputes during a trip. As inflation continues to pressure discretionary income, the tolerance for subsidizing other people’s vacation habits has evaporated. Splitting costs evenly when consumption levels differ—a long-standing source of passive resentment in group travel—is now an active dealbreaker before tickets are even purchased.

This demand for control extends to destination selection. Rather than choosing locations based on geography or landmark checklists, 82% of U.S. travelers say they book based purely on their current mood when stressed. Booking.com categorizes this as the “Vibe Check (In)” trend, with 76% expressing willingness to use technology that recommends destinations based on emotional state rather than search parameters.

Mood-based travel aligns with broader shifts in wellness tourism. Unlike previous years where wellness meant spa visits or resort lounging, travelers are seeking physiological resets. A study published in Scientific Reports analyzing nearly 20,000 participants established that a minimum of 120 minutes per week spent in natural environments correlates with significantly better health and higher wellbeing. Consequently, 79% of U.S. travelers want a vacation completely out of character for them, and 47% specifically intend to shock friends and family with their destination choices.

The performative aspect of travel is simultaneously collapsing. Thirty-two percent of travelers have deleted or avoided posting about a vacation because it felt too predictable. Social media fatigue has turned the standard European city tour or beach resort stay into a liability rather than a status symbol. This explains the rise of what Booking.com terms “Sweat Synergy”—physically demanding outdoor activities done in groups.

Monterey, California, emerged as a leading U.S. destination for 2027 based on year-over-year booking growth among the platform’s 1,000 most-booked locations between January and June 2026. Situated roughly two hours south of San Francisco, Monterey offers kelp forest kayaking and coastal cycling that fit the active-travel mandate. The underlying biology supports the appeal: University of Oxford research on synchronized physical exertion demonstrated that rowers training together released significantly more endorphins than those training alone, providing a neurological basis for why shared physical challenges bond travelers faster than shared dinners.

For visitors targeting Monterey’s outdoor infrastructure, Ian Ackland, Managing Director, Americas at Booking.com, pointed to the Spindrift Inn. The 42-room boutique property sits directly on the water, offering harbor views and immediate access to coastal trails without requiring vehicle transit.

Beyond North America, the fastest-growing international bookings for 2027 bypass traditional capitals. Reims, France; Sendai, Japan; Rosario, Argentina; Puri, India; Christchurch, New Zealand; Bratislava, Slovakia; Goiânia, Brazil; Pescara, Italy; and Asunción, Paraguay, all registered significant year-over-year growth.

Technology integration is also shifting from discovery to defense. Travelers increasingly expect artificial intelligence to manage their inboxes and shield them from work obligations while away, treating digital disconnection as a non-negotiable utility rather than a luxury perk. Meanwhile, niche interests are expanding the definition of a viable itinerary, with 72% of U.S. travelers expressing interest in paranormal tourism experiences.

Booking.com derived its 2027 trending destination list by analyzing internal reservation data across its top 1,000 global markets during the first half of 2026, ranking locations strictly by year-over-year growth velocity rather than total volume.
