England Name White-Ball Australia Squads, Bethell Returns

Jos Buttler misses the tour after hamstring surgery as four uncapped players join the T20 setup under new head coach Stephen Fleming.

Jos Buttler’s hamstring surgery will keep England’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter off the field for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, forcing a recalibration of the middle order just 12 months before the next ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Buttler underwent the procedure this week, ruling him out of an eight-match itinerary that begins with three one-day internationals in November. His absence stands in sharp contrast to the broader squad news, which is defined by returning frontline players rather than fresh casualties.

Jacob Bethell has been medically cleared following knee surgery that sidelined him since July, when he sustained the injury during a series against India. The Warwickshire batter missed the conclusion of the English summer and the subsequent Test series against Pakistan but is now available for both the ODI and T20 formats Down Under. Fast bowler Jofra Archer also returns to the ODI setup after being managed through a rest period during the recent tri-series in Pakistan. Phil Salt and Sam Curran have similarly recovered from their respective injuries to rejoin the traveling party.

Stephen Fleming, preparing for his first series as England head coach, will oversee a split-squad strategy designed to balance limited-overs ambitions with impending red-ball commitments. Four seamers — Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, and Josh Tongue — are scheduled to depart the tour immediately after the three-game ODI leg. Their early exit allows them to begin preparations for December’s Test tour of South Africa, protecting fast-bowling workloads across formats.

That transition opens the door for four uncapped players to feature heavily during the five-match T20I portion of the trip. Hampshire seamer Eddie Jack and 18-year-old Somerset batter Thomas Rew received their first full international call-ups. Both previously toured Australia with the England Lions development squad last year, giving them familiarity with local pitches and conditions. Sussex all-rounder James Coles and pace bowler Henry Crocombe complete the quartet of newcomers. Crocombe secured a two-year central contract on Monday and will participate in both the ODI and T20 squads.

Selector Marcus North indicated the ODI roster represents near full-strength depth as the program accelerates its World Cup timeline. Harry Brook continues as captain across both formats, having stabilized the T20 unit recently.

Aneurin Donald retains his spot at the top of the order after filling in for Salt during the summer. However, the spin department lacks redundancy. Adil Rashid returns from injury as the sole specialist spinner, with selectors opting against including backup leg-spinners Rehan Ahmed or Mason Crane for Australian conditions, where pitches traditionally offer less assistance to slow bowling than subcontinental surfaces.

The tour commences with a warm-up fixture against a Western Australia XI at the WACA Ground in Perth on Saturday, Nov. 7. The ODI series follows at Optus Stadium in Perth on Nov. 13, Adelaide Oval on Nov. 15, and Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Nov. 18. The T20I schedule spans five venues: the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Nov. 21, Gold Coast Stadium on Nov. 24, The Gabba in Brisbane on Nov. 27, the Sydney Cricket Ground on Nov. 29, and Manuka Oval in Canberra on Dec. 2.
