Viral Bunny Rocket’s Strawberry Tantrum Sparks Pet Rabbit Debate

Veterinarians warn that the same behaviors making internet-famous rabbits entertaining often lead to costly surrenders when owners skip research.

A pet rabbit named Rocket is drawing attention to the specialized care required for domestic bunnies after a video of him staging a silent protest over a denied strawberry circulated widely online. The footage, originally published by Parade Pets on Oct. 19, 2026, shows the animal turning his back on his owner after being refused the fruit due to weight concerns.

Rocket’s owner noted in the comments that “he means business,” according to the Parade Pets report. Viewers responded to the wide stance the rabbit adopted during the standoff. One commenter joked about the futility of affection when strawberries are withheld, the outlet reported.

The viral moment highlights a broader issue facing exotic veterinarians: prospective owners frequently underestimate the maintenance requirements of domestic rabbits. The House Rabbit Society estimates that hundreds of thousands of pet rabbits are surrendered to shelters annually in the United States, often because buyers expect a low-maintenance caged animal rather than a free-roaming companion requiring extensive home modification.

Rabbits share several behavioral traits with cats. Both species can be trained to use a litter box, groom themselves meticulously, and exhibit peak activity during dawn and dusk hours, according to Parade Pets. They also engage in sudden bursts of energy commonly referred to as zoomies and rest in a tucked posture known as loafing.

The physiological differences dictate entirely different housing needs. Cats are predators; rabbits are prey animals. When frightened, a rabbit will run and hide rather than fight or seek human comfort, Parade Pets reported. Unlike felines, rabbits generally do not tolerate being picked up or cuddled, though they may sit adjacent to their owners to show affection.

Dietary mismanagement remains a primary driver of health complications in pet rabbits. While a cat requires protein, a rabbit’s digestive system depends almost entirely on unlimited grass hay—typically timothy or orchard grass—to maintain gut motility and wear down continuously growing teeth. Fruits like the strawberry Rocket demanded contain high sugar levels that disrupt the cecal microbiome, leading to gastrointestinal stasis, a potentially fatal condition where the digestive tract slows or stops entirely.

Housing a rabbit safely demands what rescue organizations term “bunny-proofing.” Rabbits gnaw constantly. Baseboards, furniture legs, and electrical cords require protective coverings or complete removal from the animal’s access area. Standard veterinary clinics often lack the specific training required for lagomorphs, forcing owners to locate specialized exotic animal hospitals for routine care and emergencies.

Rocket performs what his owner described as a “love dance” daily, according to Parade Pets. The publication noted that the rabbit’s frustration appeared short-lived before he returned to seeking affection.
