Trump and Xi Continue Talks on Trade and Security as Netanyahu Leaves UN

The U.S.-China agenda includes tariffs, maritime security and channels between senior officials.

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping continued talks on economic policy, cross-border supply chains and stability in the Asia-Pacific after formal state dinner proceedings this week. U.S. and Chinese delegations were also advancing discussions on a bilateral summit. The two leaders shook hands before their meeting at Gimhae International Airport in Busan, South Korea.

In New York, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the 193-member United Nations General Assembly as international security and Middle Eastern regional conflicts dominated its general debate. He set out Israel’s national security posture, discussed military operations against regional adversary networks and reiterated his opposition to international initiatives that he said compromise Israeli sovereign defense.

The Washington-Beijing negotiations are part of an extended effort to manage trade balances, market access regulations and tariff structures. The agenda includes import duties, purchase commitments for agricultural and manufactured goods, and intellectual property frameworks. It also covers freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, security across the Taiwan Strait and coordinated approaches to North Korea’s ballistic missile programs.

Those economic negotiations in the Pacific coincided with efforts to address regional escalations in the Middle East through multilateral forums. The U.S. and China are also discussing sustained working groups between cabinet-level officials to address economic disputes and communication channels between defense and trade officials intended to minimize miscommunication during maritime and aerospace encounters.

After concluding his speech and official visit to the United States, Netanyahu departed New York for Tel Aviv to convene security cabinet meetings on ongoing operational developments and border security coordination.
