OpenAI Launches Sponsored Images in ChatGPT, Starting With U.S. Users

U.S. rollout begins Friday; EU free-tier users exempt under GDPR and Digital Markets Act

OpenAI has begun placing sponsored images alongside AI-generated visuals in ChatGPT, marking the company’s most direct push yet into advertising revenue. The feature rolled out to a subset of U.S. users on Friday, with plans to expand to additional countries including Mexico in the coming months.

The sponsored images appear as product placements relevant to a user’s prompt — furniture listings when someone asks for room redesign ideas, or hotel and clothing suggestions when generating travel outfit concepts. Each carries a visible “Sponsored” label and is visually separated from the organic AI output, mirroring the text-ad format OpenAI introduced in early 2026.

“Ads do not influence the responses ChatGPT gives you,” the company stated in its announcement, emphasizing that the model’s outputs remain unaffected by commercial partnerships. Human reviewers and automated systems will monitor placements for policy violations, and OpenAI says it has built guardrails to keep ads away from emotionally sensitive conversations or vulnerable users.

The rollout excludes users under 18 and, notably, anyone on free or Go-tier plans in Spain and the broader European Union. Regulatory compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, GDPR, and the forthcoming AI Act creates a de facto exemption for European users — at least for now. OpenAI has not clarified whether paid Plus or Pro subscribers in the EU will eventually see sponsored content.

Industry analysts view the move as a necessary diversification for OpenAI, which faces mounting compute costs from image and video generation models like DALL·E 3 and Sora. Competitors have taken different paths: Google integrates ads into its AI Overviews and Gemini sidebar, Microsoft monetizes Copilot through enterprise licensing, and Perplexity experiments with sponsored follow-up questions. OpenAI’s approach — native visual ads inside the generative stream — is unique among major frontier labs.

Creative professionals and small businesses that rely on ChatGPT for concepting and mockups may find the sponsored suggestions useful for discovery, but some have raised concerns about implicit endorsement and the blurring of organic inspiration with paid placement. OpenAI maintains that the separation is clear and that advertisers cannot influence the model’s actual generations.

The initial U.S. test involves a limited number of advertisers across retail, travel, and home goods categories. OpenAI says it will measure user engagement and feedback before broadening both the advertiser pool and geographic reach. No timeline has been given for EU paid-tier inclusion or for a potential ad-free subscription tier above the current $20/month Plus plan.
