Midtown Subway Gunman Escapes as Bystanders Scramble

Witnesses describe chaos at the 53rd Street and 7th Avenue station after a dispute turned deadly Saturday afternoon.

A dispute between two men on a Midtown Manhattan subway platform escalated into gunfire Saturday, leaving one person dead and triggering a chaotic evacuation of the 53rd Street and 7th Avenue station just after noon.

PIX11 reported the shooting stemmed from an argument. The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. He later died. No arrests have been made, the NYPD confirmed.

Hassen Pinchback, visiting from Orlando, Florida, described a stampede when the shots rang out. “When the train doors opened, that’s when you heard pop pop pop,” Pinchback said. A female bystander immediately began chest compressions on the bleeding man, telling him to hang in there before officers arrived.

A Washington state tourist identified only by her last name, Miller, was sitting inside a stopped train car with its doors open alongside her daughter. She counted roughly five shots. Her daughter stepped outside the car. The shooter looked directly at the girl before continuing to fire.

The teenager flagged down a conductor on a separate train who dialed 911.

Saturday midday ranks among the highest-traffic windows for the MTA system. The 53rd Street and 7th Avenue stop sits blocks from Times Square, funneling tourists and commuters through a dense underground corridor where sightlines are short and exits bottleneck quickly during emergencies. Fatal transit shootings in New York City remain statistically rare compared to overall violent crime figures, but isolated incidents routinely paralyze multiple lines and force mass evacuations across interconnected transfer points.
