Mojang Raises Minecraft Java Edition System Requirements for First Time in 17 Years
System requirements now target up to 16GB of RAM as Mojang prepares to transition the game engine to Vulkan.
Mojang has formally updated the system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition, marking the first time in 17 years that the studio has raised the baseline specifications for its iconic sandbox title. The adjustment sets a new recommended target of 16GB of system memory for high-performance settings, reflecting a broader effort to overhaul the game’s underlying technical architecture.
The revised specifications, which took effect on July 21, establish distinct hardware thresholds tailored around target framerates and visual presets at 1080p resolution. For the lower-tier “Fast preset”, designed for 30 frames per second, players will need a minimum of 8GB of RAM when paired with a discrete GPU, or 12GB if relying on an integrated GPU. To achieve 60 frames per second on the “Fancy preset”, Mojang now recommends 16GB of RAM alongside a modern x86-64 or Arm64 processor.
Historically, the original Java-based client operated with modest default allocations, reserving as little as 4GB of system memory out of the box. However, the game’s evolving world generation mechanics, complex lighting renderers, and extensive community-created modification ecosystems have steadily increased hardware burdens over the years.
A primary driver behind the hardware shift is Mojang’s planned departure from OpenGL in favor of Vulkan, a modern graphics rendering API that offers lower CPU overhead and improved multi-core processor utilization. The transition requires modern hardware pipelines capable of handling instruction sets that older processors and legacy GPU drivers cannot effectively support.
While the game will remain playable on legacy devices, Mojang warned that older setups will face reduced stability, diminished framerates, visual artifacts, and extended loading times. The studio noted that guaranteeing smooth performance on outdated components was no longer viable without hindering the engine’s long-term technical development.
In contrast, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition—built on C++ and tailored for cross-platform play across consoles, mobile devices, and PC—maintains significantly lower hardware demands. However, PC players who rely on Java Edition for custom mods will need to meet the higher hardware standard to maintain stable performance.
