AMD Developing Ryzen 7 9800HX3D Mobile Chip to Bring 3D V-Cache to Mid-Range Gaming Laptops

Advanced Micro Devices is planning to expand its specialized gaming processor technology further into mobile devices with a new Zen 5-based laptop chip, according to industry reports. Industry insider Golden Pig Upgrade revealed that the chipmaker is working on an eight-core processor featuring 3D V-Cache, which is expected to ship under the model name Ryzen 7 9800HX3D. The component is intended to bring high-cache gaming optimizations—previously reserved largely for premium desktop systems—to mid-range and upper-tier gaming laptops.

The reported processor features an 8-core, 16-thread architecture capable of boosting up to 5.1 GHz, paired with a substantial 96 MB of L3 cache. While this configuration positions the chip below higher core-count options like the 12-core Ryzen 9 9850HX in multi-threaded productivity tasks, the additional cache memory provides a distinct advantage in frame-rate stability and gaming workloads. Currently, AMD‘s mobile 3D V-Cache offerings have been limited to halo products like the 16-core Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, a flagship component operating with 128 MB of L3 cache and a 5.4 GHz boost clock that primarily powers top-tier notebooks priced well above $2,000, such as the Asus ROG Strix G16.

3D V-Cache works by vertically stacking additional SRAM directly on top of the processor’s compute die using hybrid bonding techniques. By dramatically expanding local L3 cache, the system can store more instruction sets and asset data closer to the processor cores, reducing the time spent fetching data from system RAM. In memory-sensitive gaming applications, this design significantly cuts latency bottlenecks, often delivering larger performance gains in games than simple clock speed increases or additional processing cores would provide.

Initial plans within AMD reportedly referred to the chip as the Ryzen 7 9755HX3D before settling on the 9800HX3D designation. Mass production for the new processor is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, making a commercial rollout late that year or during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2027 the most probable launch window.

AMD first introduced 3D V-Cache to consumers in 2022 with the desktop-focused Ryzen 7 5800X3D on the socket AM4 platform, a release that helped the company challenge Intel‘s long-standing dominance in high-performance desktop gaming. While Intel maintains a dominant share of the mobile gaming laptop market with its high-power HX-series processors, it has not yet deployed a direct architectural equivalent to vertical cache stacking on consumer chips. Bringing 3D V-Cache to more accessible notebook price points represents AMD’s broader effort to contest Intel’s stronghold in mobile gaming hardware, where power and thermal constraints make on-die cache efficiency particularly valuable.
