Trade.xyz to Reimburse Leveraged Traders Following SK Hynix Perpetual Oracle Anomaly

A sudden benchmark drop triggered automated liquidations on Hyperliquid, exposing oracle risks in off-hours traditional asset derivative markets.

Decentralized perpetual trading platform Trade.xyz has committed to reimbursing traders who suffered unexpected liquidation losses following a sharp price anomaly in its SK Hynix contract on the Hyperliquid network. The incident, which occurred at 23:01 UTC on Monday, saw the contract’s benchmark mark price plummet from $1,127.90 to $917.25 in seconds after an off-chain pre-market trade was broadcast across multiple market data vendors.

The SK Hynix contract represents one of the most liquid tokenized equity markets in the decentralized finance sector, backed by surging global demand for memory chips. Driven by the South Korean semiconductor manufacturer’s critical role in supplying high-bandwidth memory for Artificial Intelligence workloads, the contract regularly registers high trading activity, recently holding nearly $600 million in open interest and exceeding $1.5 billion in 24-hour volume.

The dislocation stemmed from how the protocol calculates contract valuations outside standard stock exchange hours. Trade.xyz’s pricing oracle translates South Korean won-denominated share prices from South Korean pre-market venues into U.S. dollars via live exchange rates. When an external transaction printed at an anomalous level, independent data feeds relayed the trade directly to the oracle. Because Hyperliquid relies on the mark price to monitor margin requirements and execute automated position liquidations, the sudden drop forced leveraged long positions into closure.

Addressing the event, Trade.xyz confirmed that its oracle operated strictly according to its technical design, processing external data as programmed. However, acknowledging the severe disruption to users, the platform designated the upcoming payouts as a one-time discretionary reimbursement. Details on eligibility criteria and distribution timelines are expected in the coming days, though the exchange has not disclosed the total financial cost or the exact number of impacted accounts.

In response to the vulnerability, the team is evaluating modifications to its market architecture. Potential updates include adjusting pricing models to accord greater weight to internal order book depth on Hyperliquid, which platform developers believe now offers sufficient liquidity to buffer against low-volume external pre-market prints.

Trade.xyz operates as a major builder under Hyperliquid’s HIP-3 protocol standard, a framework enabling permissionless perpetual contracts linked to external price feeds. The operator accounted for more than $22 billion of the first $25 billion in total volume generated under HIP-3, where its product suite includes conventional equity indexes like an officially licensed S&P 500 contract integrated with S&P Dow Jones Indices data.
