State Farm Begins Distributing Record $5 Billion Auto Insurance Dividend

Historic distribution covers 49 million vehicles with state payouts ranging from 4% to 10%

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance recently began distributing a record $5 billion dividend to qualifying auto insurance customers, marking the largest payout of its kind in the company’s more than 100-year history.

The distribution, which officially began following a July 31 news release, covers more than 49 million State Farm Mutual auto vehicles nationwide. Millions of policyholders have already received payments, though the insurer noted that completing distributions across all 50 states will take several months due to the volume of policy accounts.

Each customer’s payment is calculated as a percentage of the premium paid for each qualifying auto policy in 2025. Customers who held an active personal auto insurance policy in 2025 are eligible for the payout.

The percentage varies by state and ranges from 4% to 10%, according to State Farm.

Qualifying customers are being notified about pending payments through email or standard mail. Policyholders with an email address on file receive instructions to select direct digital transfers or checks, while those without an email address on file will receive a check by mail.

State Farm’s Board of Directors initially approved plans for the $5 billion distribution in February following a financial turnaround in its auto insurance operations. The insurer posted an auto underwriting gain of $3.2 billion for 2024, recovering from a $9.7 billion underwriting loss in 2023 as lower claims frequency and premium rate adjustments improved operational results.

According to official statements in the State Farm Newsroom, the payout was made possible by the company’s overall financial strength and stronger than expected underwriting performance.
