Deadly Explosive Device Detonated Outside Moscow Restaurant Kills Three

A fatal explosion triggered by a homemade bomb outside an upscale Moscow restaurant killed three people and left at least 21 others hospitalized on Saturday night, prompting Russian authorities to launch a criminal terrorism investigation. The blast occurred around 8 p.m. local time at Balzi Rossi, an Italian dining establishment located on Kudrinskaya Square in the central part of the Russian capital.

According to preliminary reports cited by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, a woman carrying a concealed explosive device attempted to gain entry to the restaurant while it was hosting a closed private event. A security guard posted at the entrance intercepted her before she could step inside, where the device subsequently detonated.

The resulting blast instantly killed the woman, the security guard, and a nearby restaurant patron. Emergency medical crews transported at least 21 injured individuals to municipal hospitals across Moscow, where several remain under intensive care.

Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee confirmed that an improvised explosive device was utilized in the attack. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin publicly categorized the bombing as a “brutal terrorist act” on Sunday, assuring the public that federal and city investigators are actively pursuing those involved. No individual or organization has claimed responsibility for the operation, and federal law enforcement agencies have not formally identified suspects.

Kudrinskaya Square, situated in Moscow’s Presnensky District, is home to prominent commercial venues and landmark architecture, including one of the city’s historic Stalinist high-rises. High-end establishments in the district frequently draw prominent figures from Moscow’s business and civic sectors, making safety protocol enforcement a central operational requirement for local venue operators.

The incident occurs amidst elevated counter-terrorism measures enforced by Russia’s Federal Security Service across major urban centers. Earlier this year, security protocols surrounding government officials, military leadership, and municipal infrastructure were heightened following multiple targeted attacks in Russian cities. Investigators examining the wreckage at Balzi Rossi have noted that no direct link has been officially established between Saturday’s blast and broader ongoing geopolitical hostilities or prior domestic targeted bombings.
