The sudden shift in focus comes after a double setback in Arsenal’s recruitment plans. The Gunners missed out on Aston Villa’s rising star Morgan Rogers and have faced growing complications surrounding Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola. With those avenues stalling, Williams has returned to the top of the shortlist for manager Mikel Arteta.
Securing the winger will require triggering his release clause, which is set at approximately £77 million (€90 million). While a substantial fee, Arsenal have shown a willingness to spend heavily on transformative talent in recent windows, notably breaking their transfer record for Declan Rice.
Athletic Club are historically tough negotiators. Due to their unique self-imposed policy of only fielding players of Basque heritage, the Bilbao-based club rarely agrees to negotiate below a player’s buyout clause. Arsenal’s recruitment team, with sporting figure Andrea Berta reportedly involved in discussions, believes Williams possesses the exact qualities needed to elevate the team’s left flank. The 21-year-old offers raw pace, directness, and elite dribbling ability—attributes that could provide a crucial alternative to Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Crucially, the Premier League is understood to appeal to Williams, and the winger views Arsenal as an attractive destination. If the Gunners decide to formalize their interest and meet the buyout clause, personal terms are unlikely to pose a significant barrier to completing the deal.
