Benjamin Moore 2027 Color of the Year Is Webster Green

The archival olive shade from the 1976 Historical Collection replaces last year's charcoal neutral amid an industry-wide shift toward green.

Benjamin Moore has named Webster Green (HC-130) its 2027 Color of the Year, elevating a mid-tone olive shade from its historical archive to headline status as the paint and design industry continues a broad pivot toward green palettes.

The selection marks a sharp departure for the Montvale, New Jersey-based manufacturer. For 2026, the brand chose Silhouette AF-655, a deep charcoal neutral that aligned with a multi-year industry preference for moody, enveloping darks. The shift to Webster Green signals a move away from those heavy neutrals toward colors that carry both saturation and historical weight.

Webster Green does not originate from a newly mixed formula. The shade belongs to Benjamin Moore’s Historical Collection, an assortment of 142 colors first introduced in 1976 to coincide with the United States bicentennial. The collection was developed by analyzing pigments used in 18th- and 19th-century North American architecture, drawing from preserved colonial homes, federal-style government buildings, and Victorian interiors. By pulling directly from this archive, the company is leveraging documented architectural history rather than forecasting an entirely new trend.

Andrea Magno, the brand’s vice president of brand, color, and integrated marketing, noted that variations of green have demonstrated consistent longevity across past, present, and future trend cycles. She described the shade as pairing stability with optimistic energy, functioning as a mid-tone anchored by rich olive and deep blue-gray undertones.

Those specific undertones dictate how the paint behaves under different lighting conditions—a practical consideration for homeowners and designers. The blue-gray base prevents the color from reading as overly yellow or acidic in south-facing rooms flooded with natural light, while the olive depth keeps it from appearing flat in north-facing spaces with cooler illumination. This duality allows the shade to function on exterior siding, where it absorbs sunlight differently than interior drywall, without losing its character.

The broader paint market confirms the timing. Green has become the dominant chromatic focus across major manufacturers for 2027. Competitors including Sherwin-Williams, PPG, and Behr have all centered their respective annual selections within the green spectrum, ranging from soft sages to deep botanical hues. Industry-wide consensus on a single color family is relatively rare and typically reflects macroeconomic shifts; during periods of market uncertainty, consumers historically gravitate toward nature-derived tones that project permanence rather than experimental novelty.

For application, Benjamin Moore positioned Webster Green as a highly adaptable anchor. The company’s official lookbook pairs the hue with Nelson Blue, Wild Aster, and Townsend Harbor Brown. These combinations lean into traditional, almost academic aesthetics, aligning with the ongoing resurgence of “dark academia” and heritage-inspired interior design that favors layered textures, wood tones, and collected antiques over stark minimalism.

The Historical Collection itself remains one of the most utilized resources in professional interior design. Originally created to help preservationists accurately restore early American structures, the palette has long since crossed over into mainstream residential use. Webster Green’s designation as the 2027 flagship brings renewed attention to the entire HC line, which includes widely specified architectural standards like Hale Navy (HC-154) and Revere Pewter (HC-172).

Benjamin Moore, founded in 1883 and acquired by Berkshire Hathaway in 2013, distributes its products exclusively through independent retailers rather than big-box home improvement stores, a strategy that maintains tighter control over color accuracy and professional specification. The 2027 Color of the Year rollout is currently active across the brand’s retail network and digital platforms.
