Baker Mayfield Thumb Injury: Buccaneers QB Tests Arm Wednesday
Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels is expected to start again against Pittsburgh as Tampa Bay prioritizes full recovery.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is scheduled to throw a football Wednesday afternoon for the first time since dislocating his thumb, a critical milestone in determining how much longer the 1-4 franchise must rely on an undrafted rookie to run its offense.
The throwing session will measure grip strength and rotational mechanics rather than signal an imminent return. Head coach Todd Bowles has ruled out any scenario where Mayfield plays short of full health, stating the veteran will not suit up if he is not “100 percent.” That standard effectively removes Mayfield from consideration for Sunday’s Week 6 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and likely eliminates him as an emergency backup on the active roster.
Dislocated thumbs present a unique rehabilitation challenge for quarterbacks. Unlike finger sprains or wrist contusions, a displaced thumb joint directly compromises the ability to grip the laces, generate spiral velocity, and absorb contact during a scramble. The injury occurred late in Tampa Bay’s three-game opening stretch, all losses, during which Mayfield threw for 615 yards and two touchdowns.
His absence elevated Jalon Daniels, an undrafted rookie who bypassed the typical developmental bench role to start consecutive NFL games. Daniels stabilized the offense in Week 5, throwing for 189 yards and a touchdown to secure a 24-16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. That win snapped a four-game losing streak and provided the coaching staff with enough confidence in the backup to avoid rushing Mayfield into a high-risk situation against a 3-2 Steelers defense.
Mayfield is in his fourth season with Tampa Bay after signing a multi-year extension following a career resurgence in 2024. Last year, he passed for more than 3,600 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 382 rushing yards across 17 starts, anchoring an offense that transitioned fully from the Tom Brady era. His durability had been a defining asset; before the thumb injury, he had started every game for the Buccaneers since taking over the job.
A dislocated thumb typically requires a minimum recovery window of three to five weeks for athletes whose livelihoods depend on precise hand function, depending on whether ligaments were torn during the displacement or if the joint was successfully reduced without surgical intervention. Wednesday’s workout will reveal whether swelling has subsided enough to tolerate the torque of an NFL-caliber throw.
Daniels will continue taking first-team reps throughout the week as Tampa Bay prepares for Pittsburgh. The Steelers arrive at Raymond James Stadium carrying a winning record, contrasting sharply with the Buccaneers’ early-season struggles.
Mayfield’s next opportunity to play in a regular-season game is Week 7, contingent entirely on how his right hand responds to the stress of Wednesday’s passes.
